What would make you stay indefinitely?

Today the average tenure at a company is ~ 2 years, including Google and FB. Is there anything a company could do to make you stay indefinitely? Let’s say keep giving you the opportunity to learn, continue to promote you, give you more responsibility, good wlb...? More TC? Is there a particular set of benefits that would cause you to stay? Background — I have had tenures of 8 years with my first job, then 3 years and after that haven’t been at a place longer than a year for the last 5...

Yeah there can be many reasons for that though first job I was in a field I was pigeon holed into from previous jobs I really hated it. Then I joined an early stage startup that had no money — they couldn’t continue to pay me but it was a break I needed as an iOS dev and got me into it full time. Then I tried building my own app and starting my own company, that lasted a year and we had good initial traction but were never able to raise a seed round. At that point I needed a job for real $$ so I took one as a contract iOS dev for $125 hr eventually the ceo offered to just keep me on at 190k a year. Since I didn’t want to bother interviewing (it was around the holidays) I stuck with it. I since moved into management and after 9 months I got an offer for 300k tc more than 1.5 what I was making to come to my current position and there I am 5 jobs in 5 years. It happens, sometimes over a long career you will pave your own path at times. I don’t think it should always be held against you but there need to be explicable circumstances.

Very good question actually... I’d say no management layers is what would make me stay indefinitely at a company. If you remove all the levels, no manager, no sr manager no director etc. (Which is fairly impossible to do), then people wouldn’t care about fighting to get above you. This would create a better team spirit in all the engineering teams. We’re all in to build cool product and to make lot’s of money. Plus, most of the time, people leave their managers not the company. Managers is what make things funky. If you join a company is because you like what they do in general and they agree to pay you ok money. In fact you and the company sign a contract. If you leave a company is because you feel like you can be treated better somewhere else. Which means (most of the time) they followed the contract but you didn’t know about all the internal headaches when you joined the company.

People often don't leave managers, but managers are the scapegoats! They are like the eggs that protect the chickens from getting killed!

People don’t leave companies, people leave managers. If you’re a manager and think that is not true, then look in the mirror for the problem.

Respect and courtesy. Fewer execs and yes-people.

Hmm... it’d be work from home with high TC. And WFH is worth like +100k TC to me.

LinkedIn benefits are crazy good. I get $125 a month tax free money for transportation. I get $80 a month for my phone, and because my phone is financed, the phone itself is being paid for. I get $2000 a year for "wellness" which can be used for gyms, massages, financial consulting, boarding my dog, and a whole lot of other things. I get free food two times a day, 5 days a week. Once a month we have a day where you can do pretty much anything you want, and most of the company just takes the day off. On top of that we have 17 company holidays a year. And even further we have unlimited vacation. I also get paid a ridiculous amount, and it just keeps going up every year. It will be extremely hard to leave until I make enough for retirement.

I heard it is following tour of duty concept. During 4 years LI will give you whatever you want and you gave LI whatever you had. After 4 years then you can do whatever you want to do

If there are no better options I can see, then I'll stay---until I have enough savings to FIRE. You're not supposed to actually like your job. If it were enjoyable, why would they pay you so much to do it?

I’d stay forever in one place if I really liked my manager and my coworkers, was being paid above market and continued to get promotions and raises that are above average, received continual learning, and a flexible schedule. But damn LinkedIn sounds like a good place right now 👀

Guaranteed promo + raises every 2 years. Not really feasible to run a real business but generally speaking the reason why I leave companies is for promo + $
