What's a fun low stress tech company to work at?

Twitch RbOv54
Mar 1 535 Comments

Not trying to sound stupid, entitled, or naive here... And I know the question itself might not make all that much sense... but was wondering what other companies out there have a fun and low stress vibe to be part of. The early days of twitch was honestly really fun, and fairly low stress. But nowadays, as it feels like we are on the downturn of the funding cycle and corporate parents are cracking the whip to cut costs and force unnatural inorganic growth, I just don't feel like it's a fun place to be anymore. And was hoping to find something similar to join...

I recognize that early twitch maybe was an anomoloy, as people were passionate and friendly and tended to mostly get along. And I recognize that most companies have pressure and hard work and corporate politics and all. But just wondering if there are other companies or teams out there that have the more playful fun culture where people are really passionate about something but you're not expected to work bad hours to survive and have to worry about your job all the time.

I just feel concerned as some of the companies I thought were fun, like riot or blizzard or even discord, are apparently going through similar processes and I'm not sure if that's just a macroeconomic thing pertaining to lack of growth in the economy... Or if it's just me

:/

    Airbnb.

I work 15-20 hours per week, in at 11am, home by 2-3pm, no one gets fired unless they’re unpopular, no pressure to deliver projects, deadlines are optional and change all the time, work is assigned but no one follows up on it so I just chill and do bare minimum. We have tons of meetings with no follow up and “let’s continue this discussion later.”

Seriously the easiest job of my life, people are super friendly and nice, HQ is gorgeous, food is delicious (but healthy), and 2 week holiday shutdown fully paid. Hiring bar is super high but if you can get in then it’s amazing.

Again, who said I was sitting on my ass? I’m saying the culture here moves incredibly slow and if you read our internal blind forum many agree. People who came to Airbnb from tougher work cultures are able to work half as much and still excel here. Don’t get mad if you’re not as productive. :)

I’m also not an engineer, the TC reflects non-tech role, and I’ve found great success working half as much for more comp and more upward mobility here. All ex management consultants, ex bankers, and ex FANG people who came here are lowkey laughing at how much easier the work culture is here compared to their companies of origin but we won’t voice that out loud because then it implies we aren’t adding value or we’re slacking when really the organization here is so chaotic and the leadership disconnected resulting in overall less rigor.

      Highly recommend.

Yes, can get up to 300% rewards (MS caps at 200%), refreshers are way better, and there is opportunity to advance very quickly if you are performing at the next level (whereas MS generally is slower due to more levels and plenty of managers who set arbitrary thresholds for time in level before recommending promotion)

It was the dream job when I joined. A pretty flat hierarchy, everyone was passionate and stayed late to play games hang out and work on side projects, had unlimited autonomy to try new projects. It was honestly really fun and it felt proud to represent a community that everyone at the office cared about.

But don't think that's the case today. Reorgs and layoffs followed by more Reorgs and new execs means twitch culture is mostly dead. More of a political house with different execs vying for power. Company also lost vision and strategy and unsure where its going

I think it's easy to get burnt out if you do not have the right mindset. The people working 50+ hours vs. 40 aren't necessarily working harder, just longer hours. You need to use your PTO. Use your sick time. There's no shame in it. People who get burnt out have set unrealistic expectations for themselves.
      Mar 3

How have your perf ratings been yclgn@? Doesn't your team/ manager say things like " we move fast and break things" and expect you to work at nights and weekends? If rest of the team is working late hours, there would be an implicit expectation that you do too.

      May 6
    • Facebook aurelio
Hey, it is as I said, great compensation, you will also grow your skills. Still the amount of work and the speed at which you need to execute is extreme. It will require you to fully dedicate your time for this: weekends, evenings. So if you have hobbies, or commitments, you will not have time at all. It is also bad for your health. You can join and try it, but keeping this mindset. Meaning you should be prepared to leave at any time in case you hated it. So keep on leetcoding, from the day you join.

Is it even possible to get an interview at Spotify? They’re hiring efforts don’t seem to be too solid and largely based on referrals. I always loved the app and I remember trying to reach out to a recruiter several times to no avail, even when my resume was fairly solid. It was so bad I walked to their NY office and tried to hand over my paper resume lol

guess this depends on what you work on. the project i work on is very stressful and in the critical revenue path. it could be less so, but it suffers from horrible leadership and endless tech debt thanks to lots of rookie tech decisions. have heard similar stories company-wide, but usually easier going when not on a revenue product.

I interviewed at Spotify in 2017. Still waiting to hear back.

Got offers from Google and Facebook on that same month.

PS. They made me pay for my own hotel and the I had to email them after a month to get a refund, meanwhile I was getting ghosted by them in regards to the interview.

      Go figure 😂

I'm in year 3, and I think it ebbs and flows. Last year was pretty rough, and I think a lot of 10+ yr employees are cranky that it's not like it was in the 2000s, but it's still pretty damn awesome. Anytime I find myself feeling a little salty, I book a free ride to a cafe I've never been to before, or go visit the mini-Highline they built for us in Sunnyvale, and reflect on the fact that I can actually do something like that during the work day and still be really good at my job.

I think most of us in tech need to remember how good we all have it, in the broader scheme of things. And that goes double for us at Google.

Depends on the manager. Some managers micro manage your tasks to the point that the tasks take at least 40 hours a week for over achievers, not to forget the excluded effort to tackle downtimes, BI related issues. Seriously considering switching teams/companies.

While the company does make a difference, I think finding the right team is more important. I personally have a really chill team within Amazon where we work hard when needed, but also play really hard when things are not as urgent and demanding. Factors like your team members, immediate manager chain, and the phase of development your product is in are important factors that determine how much fun you have.

For any one interested, I'm in Prime Video and at least half my year averages with <40 hour weeks with the rest being 40-50. Rare occasions a week or so before critical deadlines where I may need to go over that, but management is understanding the work put in to meet the deadline and are cool with you taking a few days easy or completely off.

This is true. eBay is quite a nice place to work. Lots of fun coworkers. Honestly sure the downside is the stock price is not great now and the managerial hierarchy is a bit stifling but on the upside the stock is about to go up with the spinoff of acquisitions. As for lifestyle this is a great company. Work 10 to 3 if you want. And yes the game rooms are a bit old but you can't beat the low hours and fun loving coworkers.

It is true. I would even say 95% Indian, 4% Chinese, 1% everything else. It's quite a phenomenon, because the company pays pretty well still. It's curious why more locals don't want to work there. It might just be the fact that it's dominated by Indians now

Frupidity, micromanagement, bureaucracy, empire building, and lowering the hiring bar are all fair things to complain about though.
