Recently got a interview, anyone know if it’s similar to data scientist at FAANG (in terms of the job scope and pay)?
McKinsey is a PPT company. the data "scientist" (laugh break) does not even write the PPT.
McKinsey name carries more weight that these so called Tech companies. FAANG may come and go, no one can displace McKinsey.
poor take
Keep living in your bubble. Do some research on McK folks, their work, their impact on the world and their TC
Haha, your comments tell me you have never been in the boardroom and no idea how strategy works
Things are changing in consulting 100% and shifting quickly to advanced analytics consulting and data scientists are going to be critical, so they are adding staff at all firms to meet the market demand. It’s going to explode in the next 24 months. McKinsey is up there with Goldman Sachs, Google, or any other company that deserves top respect. They work with the best companies on the planet which have the deepest pockets. Also, the broad talent there is almost unmatched. PHD’s as subject matter experts, finance, accounting and now technology to support advanced analytics, ML and I would bet serious $ AI for clients where needed. That super genius kid you grew up with who did everything perfect and made it look easy, he works @ McKinsey! I’m getting my Masters of Business Analytics @ a top 25 school right now. Almost no one was considering consulting, now everyone is.
If you're serious about data science, mck is not the place to be. Working at FANG will give you unlimited access to all the in house data, which is required for any sophisticated ml application or in depth data analysis.
FAANG is the new finance. You guys are all snobs ... All you care is how to sell people's data and make money off of it ... Wait till this stops once Wall Street finds something else to pump
Agreed - but there are amazing problems to be solved in other places like healthcare, finance, manufacturing, transportation and many many more.
FAANG is the cutting edge of data science today - lots of Mck clients are groups or companies that are struggling and bureaucratic and will barely have any BI infrastructure. Read Matthew Stewart's "Management Myth"
Data science isn't just about modelling, it's about applications. What is FAANG doing that's actually helping the other 99% besides making them consume more junk?
It’s a mixed bag OP. I know a couple of folks who love that position and some that hate it. Common issue is that you will be brought to the team to solve interesting client problem but your team members might have very limited experience in working with data scientist. That can create scoping, timing and quality issues. It’s changing as mckinsey is getting more people with data and analytics background. Now for the scope - expect more travel and shifting teams/problems every 6-8 weeks. Pay - not sure.
Do you know what the implementation-research-client interaction split is? And is the report and other client facing material prep mostly on the consultants or on the data scientists when it comes to data heavy projects?
Second class citizen, at least that’s why it used to be for any non-consulting roles. We
