What's the point of buying expensive cars?

Porche, Audi, BMW, Mercedes, etc are a waste of money. After a certain price point, the overall comfort and safety are just the same in Honda, Toyota, Subaru, etc. In the end, it is about gas vs all-electric: Tesla or No tesla.

    If you think of a car as just transportation, then buy something economical. If you get some intrinsic value out of a luxury or performance vehicle and you can afford it, why not? Some people spend money on travel, others like buying art, some people like the feel of driving something expensive. And some people do nothing with their income and just save. To each their own.

    I’ve owned a brand new BMW and a 5-year-old Nissan before that.

    Within 2 weeks of owning the BMW I was exactly as happy with it as I was originally with the Nissan, but from that point forward I could no longer tolerate anything less than BMW or similar.

    My average cost of vehicle ownership went up like 1200% since then for every car after the BMW. Net gain in happiness has been practically zero.

    If you aren’t actually interested in cars, the primary reason to own one of these luxury cars is the fact that your vehicle is traditionally used as a direct proxy for how wealthy you are (which is why they can help you appeal to certain women, who are also generally just as disinterested in cars as you are).

    The value of money is relative. To a rich enough person, such cars don't cost very much at all.

    For them to worry about the price difference between a Porsche and a Toyota is like for you to worry about the price difference between a $1 or $2 bag of chips.

      As you start earning more, the extra income should go towards paying off the primary residence. $15k is $15k whether you earn 100k or 750k. Still feel slike $15k is a lot of money at annual household income of 500k+. Salary is salary. It is not the same thing as net worth and until you bring in some serious money so that your annual income trumps others' net worth, it is just stupid to spend so much money on things that depreciate in value. Increase assets, not liabilities.

      There’s plenty that meet your “until” part, 0.01% is a bit exaggerated (1% is already in the 500k I believe). Not to mention many approach life differently, no right or wrong IMO, it’s your own experiment, you live with the results

      Mosfe I disagree about paying down your primary residence. Instead you should invest the extras money to earn 8%+ interest while only costing you 4%. There is some risk associated with it, but if you can keep making your fixed monthly payments you come out quite a bit ahead.

    You guys are missing the initial statement. Poster has a point, after mid-level luxury cars everything after that is all the same BS. Sure there's some bells n whistles depending on make / model, but in the end it's like a grocery bag vs a Louis Vuitton; the basic premise is that they still can carry the same shit and serve an identical purpose

    The comfort is definitely not the same nor is the engineering. Having driven a few BMWs I would say the price is worth it for the performance but only if you can afford the maintenance.

    Honda/Toyota/Subaru doesn't have proper autopilot like Mercedes or Volvo. Honda/Toyota sedans doesn't have AWD for winter Tahoe trips. Toyota doesn't have Android auto. Also, even so-called "premium" sound system in these cars sucks.
