When would you say that ship sails? I make a modest income in financial services and slowly pursued my master's and doctorate all through my 30s while my salary stayed flat. I thought I'd move up after the PhD but found that in today's online job market I have no value. Has anyone else here reinvented themselves and gotten their first big pay bump or title well after 40?
Linguistics. A field where there might be 50 new doctorates for every professorship opening.
@ ✌️✌️ - I'm only an amateur coder so I don't think I could get past one of today's automated resume screeners. I had been thinking about doing a postdoc and getting into NLP, something I'm fascinated with but have no direct experience doing. I'd gladly do a low-paid or unpaid internship to get into it, but have no idea how to start. (Remember, I'm over 40 and have never changed jobs in this millennium.)
Current TC? Target TC?
Current 45k; target is anything higher.
Leetcode. Be willing to move. You can find something if you work for it.
I've seen people starting CS program in their late 50s. Some did it due to layoffs, some due to family changes. It was just so inspiring, that whenever I felt down I thought about their drive and power of will to do things, and how it's important to believe in own goals.
Current TC is 45k with a PhD? Wow. You must not be in California. Can you code? If so leetcode. If not, maybe focus on getting a PM type role.
Certainly not in California (and I don't think I'd want to go there given what everyone says). For the record, I didn't yet have my master's or PhD when I got hired; I studied after hours and they have little relevance to my job, which is just ordinary office work than even a smart high schooler could probably do.
You should come here and see for yourself before you decide. There are a lot of haters but there is a reason it costs so much to live here, people actually want to live here.

Uh oh, I think that at my age I'm already supposed to be in management, and have missed the boat.
