When does Amazon file for GC for SDE2 L5?

I’m joining Amazon in August and I am currently on my F-1 OPT visa. I have 2 more H-1B tries.

Does Amazon file for GC when on F-1 OPT? I heard FB and Google file for GC even when students are on F-1 OPT.

Could anyone please provide any insights?

Last time I checked, you need to be 6 months at Amazon before starting the process. You can do it on F1. You can even get a GC while on F1.
Don’t know what will happen for Indians though. Applying w/o H1 might be risky for them.

Yeah I am a bit worried. Which is why I thought I could ask my manager now?

USCIS can’t or won’t stop you...

Also won’t recommend until you file for OPT extension. Because OPT extension application might be in jeopardy if you apply for GC and the extension app has question asking if you have taken any step for GC (I don’t remember if such question was there).

Another big concern if you need to travel outside of the US. That’s why I’m not sure if it’s a good idea for the Indian citizens.

For others, it probably takes less than 2 years now a days.. it was even faster few years back. So, people usually wouldn’t bother traveling outside while the GC process is going on.

OP, as an Indian, I’d recommend you to wait until you get H1.

H1 is initially non-immigrant intent. So, it might be denied if you initiate GC.

Thanks. I guess people at L5 are making that much and maybe more at Amazon. I’m located in Bay Area.

You can file day 1, on F-1 OPT, with manager approval.

If you are on F1 and you file GC you need stay in the US until the process completes, or at least until you get EAD/AP.

If you are from a backlog country this is not possible. So filing GC on F1 only really makes sense for people from non backlog country.

People from India or China should first transition to h1b.

This is my understanding and I'm not a lawyer, you might want to confirm this with someone who is a lawyer if you are making life decisions based on this.

But filing it while on F1 helps in reducing that 15 year time period to 14 years if I get my H1B next year right. That way I could save some time?

It will reduce your 150 year wait to 149 years.

Premium processing is back right. It was 150 years when premium processing got suspended. Now premium processing is resumed.

Premium processing doesn't affect your priority date though.

First thing is to get H1B which will now be next year (2020) and most likely it will have start date of Oct 2020
After that you can file for GC
So long time to go before you have to worry about GC
