Microsoft Level 64. 5 Yoe. I am planning to interview at Google. My recruiter told me that they don't hire T5 externally with only 5 YOE. I feel like MS Level 64 to Google T4 is a down level for me. I know some friends who make T5 in 3.5 years and T6 in 4.5 years, but they all joined Google out of campus and got promoted internally. Should I insist on interviewing at T5 or should I interview at T4 and try to get higher TC? Current TC: 250K
You’d get more than 250k TC at L4
Do you have a graduate degree? Or you joined as 59 and got to 64 in 5 years?
I was at Microsoft. You should push for T5 if both of the following is true: 1. You are very good at system design 2. You join a team that matches your current domain knowledge. Believe it or not T5s at Google are probably more competent than L65s at Microsoft.
Just provide an extreme data point for Google T4 TC: 370k plus 50k sign on, with strong competing offer. However, downlevel is a common thing at Google based on what I observed these days.
How many yoe? Also, which competing offers and at which levels?
I had this last month. HC downleveled me to L4. I had to push the recruiter to set me up for L5 loop. She said me the same thing that they don't hire external L5 with 6 yoe. I'm l64 at Microsoft. Got other offers and didn't choose Google eventually.
Focus on TC over level but try to go for 5. As said, they downlevel a lot but if you're good you can promo quick. Google prefers people to excel at a lower level and promo rather than struggle at higher.
Going to t4 is simply not worth it. There is no guarantee that you'll achieve same promo velocity outside of your current team (read: manager)
