Which offer would you take? (Amazon / FB)

Amazon (return intern): ~147k TC in Austin FB (new grad): ~174k TC in Menlo Park The Amazon offer looks better on paper after tax and rent, but I’m guessing FB will be better for career growth (and perks.) Any input appreciated.

Amazon offer is higher. Did you calculate your TC right?

Facebook PFHV77 Oct 2, 2019

I interned at both, fb fte is much better, the stress is based more on how much you wanna push yourself as opposed to manager stress. Tc from fb crushes amazon. The only reason I'd go to Amazon is if you want to work on a wide array of stuff (amzn go, etc) or if you really like the team's culture

I’d say TC from FB is actually lacking compared to AMZN TC. Since California has state income taxes and Texas does not, take home pay for FB is higher than AMZN by only ~$362/month. Housing is 3-4 times more costly in Menlo Park than it is in Austin. Other living expenses are more expensive in Menlo Park as well. So from a financial perspective, taking the Amazon offer and living in Austin is much better.

Honestly, one is a shitty adtech company and at the other one is a datacenter operations company with a network of retail stores where you get to cry at your desk. Given your options I’d go with FB so you can be close to companies that aren’t destroying the world when you decide to switch jobs.

With every camera that’s added Apple increases the price of the iPhone by 1.2x

OP - do you only interview for the most toxic companies in the valley or you were just unlucky ?

Amazon prestige🧐 OP Oct 2, 2019

Im just a toxic person i guess. How else would i get top contributor on blind?

Facebook longgamma Oct 2, 2019

This "toxic culture" buzzword of the day is pretty subjective. Some thrive with faster pace/higher competitiveness/etc than others.
