Hands down Apple! They are not your traditional Semiconductor company but they are doing some amazing things with silicon!

Xilinx is semiconductor company, no? Like NVIDIA also has software department that may pay even better

But yeah, it’s a semiconductor company, but it’s a post in HW. So people assume not software position

That's interesting. In qcom I think pay pecking order goes from hardware at top, to systems, and finally firmware/software.

Semiconductor guys are out of luck when it comes to TC... Apple is probably the only one where your TC may compare decently to software engineer. Otherwise IC design engineer compensation will look pathetic when compared to a software (CS) position with same YOE. Unfortunately thats the sad reality of semiconductor industry.

They are starting to realize writing VHDL /Verilog is essentially like writing software and pay is improving. You may have to advertise yourself as an FPGA engineer assuming you have any experience with FPGAs. They also have a difficult time hiring Verification engineers with UVM.

Completely agree. I left semiconductors for software 3 years ago and I'm making more than my peers after the career restart. Margins are too low in semi to expect huge TC, so it helps to go to companies like Apple where their revenue source is well diversified.
      Jun 28
    • Xilinx LWkj71
I was in backend and now doing front end trying to market myself as an FPGA design engineer. I believe FANG hw TCs should be comparable? How is it at Microsoft ?
      Jun 28
    • Microsoft / Data smckenzie
It has its pros and cons like any company. I really enjoy working here right now cuz I'm on projects rooted in some technologies I'm really passionate about, but I do miss the HW crowd from time to time. It can get a little political, but after working at ON and Intel, the politics thrown around are amateur hour. I'm happy enough that I'm not looking to go anywhere else right now.

I think Broadcom pay is like Apple for principle and above. Principle easily make 350+ and senior principles make 450+ in Bay Area.

Move to swe. Don’t play this game. Long run you will win. There is no competition in semiconductors. Its comoditized and consolidated. They wanna keep it that way.

    1. Apple/FB/G/Broadcomm
    2. Xilinx/Samsung
    3. Nvidia

    Rest dont matter.
Fb’s intial pay can beat Apple easily (Speaking from personal experience), I am not sure about refreshers though.

Sorry for Broadcomm doesn’t pay tier 1 at all and no Nvidia doesn’t pay tier 1 but it’s definitely tier 2. Xilinx is not tier 2.. probably 2.5ish

I have worked in hw industry for 4 years and have worked in 1 tier and 1 tier 2 company don’t want to mention the name so that’s how the numbers come

I’m from Broadcom and I beg to differ with Microsoft’s opinion ,I have cracked the interview in those listed companies and except one company nobody is able to match Broadcom’s pay .If you are in a stable group ( half of the groups in Broadcom are pretty stable ) no need to worry about cuts
Only thing that worries is after ICB5 promotion seems to be almost impossible

Qualcomm gives you respect? Please. Worked there almost 7 years. As far pay goes a senior engineer at Q gets $108K.
