Who is dumber, AOC or Trump?

"Unemployment is low because everyone has two jobs."

Compare that statement to Trump accidentally saying "Tim Apple" or misspelling the word "coffee" in a tweet. Comment below the dumbest thing you remember from either politician (note I asked for dumbest, not unethical/disgusting/politically incorrect).

Trump didn’t misspell coffee. He misspelled “coverage”

Besides that, Trump says a plethora of stupid shit on an almost daily cadence.

“This is an island surrounded by water, big water, ocean water.” No shit. What the fuck else is an island surrounded by?

“It’s really cold outside, they are calling it a major freeze, weeks ahead of normal. Man, we could use a big fat dose of global warming!” Demonstrating a clear lack of understanding on what climate change actually is.

“Don’t believe those phony numbers when you hear 4.9 and 5 percent unemployment. The number’s probably 28, 29, as high as 35. In fact, I even heard recently 42 percent.” Like, wat?

“I’m speaking with myself, number one, because I have a very good brain and I’ve said a lot of things.” ... Who the fuck says “very good brain”? That’s an awful way of trying to say “I’m an intellectual.”

There’s plenty more. Just Google it.

Also, AOC was an econ major and she says the things that she says. And she got out of school much more recently than Trump. I would expect an econ major to have a better understanding of how metrics such as unemployment are calculated, wouldn't you?

Yes. It showed how little she knows about basic economics.

Plus she is a gaffe machine, she has said dumb shit again and again
Plus anyone who over uses “like” and “yeah” should not be making policy that influences our economy in anyway

If you don't realize AOC was referring to the "sharing economy" type of jobs where you drive Uber on top of your full time job then you may be the dumb one.

      OP
How does that affect unemployment numbers?
      May 16
    • Credit Karma EllisDee25
It doesn’t - she wasn’t asked about what effects unemployment. She was asked “isn’t the economy good? Unemployment is down” and AOC said the numbers don’t tell the story, then said the quote.

Republican politicians and press are either using the quote in bad faith or they are just children who occasionally wander into a conversation among adults and are totally confused.

      OP
Yes, I understand the context of the quote. My questions are:
      1) let's say out of 160 million in the American workforce, 150 million drove for Uber and had a full time job. How does this affect the rate of unemployment in this country?
      2) do you think that more than 10% of the American workforce drives for Uber and lyft or other similar "sharing economy" jobs
      ?

      OP
Her exact words were "unemployment is low because everyone has two jobs." Her use of the word "because" implies a causality between the number of people having two jobs and the rate of unemployment in this country.

Capitalism is the most natural and fair economic system. It's how bacteria do their thing, it's how plants do their thing, it's how animals do their thing. You don't see the trees taking sunlight from the tallest tree and redistributing it to the shorter trees.

Anthropologists believe that humans lived in egalitarian bands until about 10k years ago when agriculture (or religion according to some views) became generalized in much of the world.

Systems of generalized wage-labor where most major production is guided by “exchange value” don’t appear until the last several centuries and only became the norm after WWI. Governments run in the interests of merchants and traders and small producers briefly appeared in China and then in the remote parts of Europe hundreds of years later... often in the form of protestant movements against the (feudal) Catholic Church.

In medieval times, not only were they feudal (rather than capitalist) but profiting off loans was forbidden or restricted as immoral.

Trump actually thinks China pays for the tariffs he is enacting.

    https://www.axios.com/donald-trump-us-china-trade-war-tariffs-deal-e154abe0-a00e-4c2f-8caa-1e9a6f370238.html
“I've asked several current and former administration officials whether Trump actually believes that China pays the tariffs — rather than the reality that U.S. importers and consumers do.

The consensus is "yes": That's what he actually believes.
And as one former aide said: There’s little point trying to persuade Trump otherwise, because his belief in tariffs is "like theology."”

The different between Trump and AOC is that AOC is a 29-year-old freshman congressman who has plenty of time to learn and has very little sway on the US economy.

Trump is almost 80 and controls the markets by tweet.

You should care a lot more about his grasp of economics.

Both are partially right. Both China and the customer pay.

The prices for goods imported from China won’t rise by the full 25% as demand falls faster than linearly.
