(Not someone who is ‘electable’ or ‘should win’ but rather someone who has captured your attention and you really like/agree with).

We are talking about actions, not views. When someone actively worked to deprive others of their rights and those actions have lasting consequences on real people, they aren’t presidential material.

Using everyone else was doing it too (they weren’t) as an excuse, also shows she isn’t presidential material. We need leaders, not lemmings.

Politicians aren’t owed a role in government. They are fungible. We can always find other candidates without a trail of harm.

If she had worked to pass laws enshrining segregation in a state constitution, she wouldn’t have a campaign and we wouldn’t be having this conversation. Rights are rights.

Stupid is stupid. You’re not talking about anything at all. Just running your mouth.

Did you have something cogent to contribute?

Gabbard was an ardent foe of equality for queer people in her younger years, working for two anti-LGBTQ organizations in the late ’90s that were led by her father. Mike Gabbard, a Hawaii legislator who helped drive the fight against marriage equality in the state, headed up the Alliance for Traditional Marriage and Stop Promoting Homosexuality, which promoted harmful conversion therapy.

The younger Gabbard, elected to the Hawaii legislature herself in 2002 at the age of 21, railed against “homosexual extremists” in 2004, coming out against same-sex civil unions in her state. That same year she opposed anti-bullying legislation meant to protect gay students, arguing that it would teach young people that homosexuality is “normal and natural.”

On another note more importantly as you mentioned this was back in 2004

Heck even Obama and Hillary were against gay marriage before it became popular.

But unlike Hillary and Obama at least she is contrite

Contrite? Hardly, she just won’t use government to enforce her animus any more.

In a 2016 interview with the publication Ozy, Gabbard suggested that her personal beliefs on homosexuality actually haven’t changed:

It was, she says, the days in the Middle East that taught her the dangers of a theocratic government “imposing its will” on the people. (She tells me that, no, her personal views haven’t changed, but she doesn’t figure it’s her job to do as the Iraqis did and force her own beliefs on others.)

She has also recently supported anti-LGBT judges.

And, she has done nothing to undo the harm she did. It’s not like she’s put any effort in getting those marriages, her efforts blocked for over a decade, retroactively recognized.

She is like Hillary, I’ll give you that, personally opposed to gays, but says what she needs to in public to get elected by those that don’t know her history.

The reality is that gay issues aren’t a priority issue for many people in 2020. We’re in the middle of a cultural fracture & so we need candidates that can actually bridge the void. Yang & Tulsi could actually appeal to much of the country whereas the rest of the candidates seem to have forgotten how to play the game. I don’t care how someone feels about gays as long as they’re not using their power as a hammer to smash. Live and let live. Personally I don’t care what you do at home, but I also don’t like many aspects of the modern LGBT movement. Democrats need a candidate that can win, not some left wing pipe dream. Voters are likely to look at the state of the economy, that we haven’t entered any new wars & then bubble in the incumbent.

Got it. You define bridging the divide and as ignoring gay issues.

I define it as winning. None of the Dem candidates are going to take us back in time socially... The momentum for gay issues is in a good direction & I think that will continue.

True. No wonder republicans are dumb; racist is a dumb thing to do. Racist people look for some kind of status, they want to prove that they are more important than others. Insecure people!

She has incredible policy experience and chops. Detailed plan to address issues that matter to people (college tuition, healthcare, gun violence, child care to name a few). She has also rejected big pacs and Corp donors so she can be less influenced by lobbyists.

Thats right she wants to make everything free except guns. She doesn’t have what it takes to win.. She’ll get walked all over in the debates.

Also all her plans have a solid financial plan as well. Most of it is funded by her tax on the ultra rich (>50M income). Her 2% tax won’t break their bank and it’s essential for keeping capitalism alive. If the middle and lower classes won’t consume, they can’t continue to get rich. So in my books she’s not as socialist as you think.
