Why Netflix?

I see a bunch of posts around people moving to Netflix and quoting such high TC. Makes me wonder if any of these numbers are even real. Also, is Netflix considered in the same league as Facebook and Google in terms of technical challenges? Wondering if it reflects wells on the resume. Can someone share their experience?

Money is all that matters dude. When you retire it won’t matter if you worked at google or Facebook or Netflix. What will matter is if you can live the way you want without depending on anyone and that you’ve money to pay for your medical expenses.

Really? You'll spend the majority of your waking life between now and when you retire at work. You don't think it matters to feel like that time is the least bit interesting?

Yes, the technical challenges are on a similar order of scale. Netflix traffic accounts for a very significant chunk of the bandwidth used in USA, Canada, and probably UK, etc.

Comp is real, they doubled my pay (from Microsoft) and bumped my base 8-20% per year since. I don’t care much about the league thingy, work is rewarding/ challenging enough. Low politics/rules. Peers are awesome folks

Woah 8-20% per year is awesome. Did you have to get competitions offers to get the raise?

Netflix BlndrThngs Feb 6, 2018

Moved from Microsoft to Netflix with only that offer in hand (they reached to me, I was going to look for a change pretty soon but they came first). Gave them my current comp and they didn’t low ball me. For yearly bumps I did nothing but accept the number my manager came up with. We’re encouraged to look elsewhere/ get numbers for matching but haven’t done it so far.

I don’t think NFLX comp is much higher when compared to other similar companies like G/FB. The comp looks higher since it includes the equity portion too. Most folks in the G/FB companies might not be making their personal top of market in some cases and NFLX helps you get to to that $$ number.

Work done at Netflix reflects well on resumes. I have been recruited and offered jobs by both Amazon and Google over the past 5 years. (I’ve been at Netflix 9 years). Pay is indeed high and typically more than people were making if they came from FB or Google, but not always. Neither Google nor Amazon could pay me more than Netflix and that made my decision to stay both times pretty easy. Completely changing how people watch movies and TV and then building a massive studio is pretty awesome to be a part of. I can say that for my career specialty, I am at the best company in the world to excel at what I do. I’m not a software engineer but I am in a technical management role.

With 9yrs experience you must be a director or VP? If you are on the management track, hows the career growth at Netflix?

Netflix Johnny5 Feb 8, 2018

Career growth is pretty good. Everyone I know that’s been around for 5+ years has been promoted once or twice.

Could anyone comment on the camaraderie? They say they don’t expect/promise unconditional loyalty, which I get. But what about healthy banter, team events, extra curricular?
