Why doesn’t Uber try running ads in their app?

Uber has a lot of location data for their riders. I’m guessing it’s possible to infer the kind of restaurants, bars etc that you like to visit. Based on this, some ideas to run ads: 1. If your destination is a commercial area, the app could recommend some interesting things for you nearby. 2. If you’re in a new city or a part of town you’ve never visited before , the app can easily detect this and recommend stuff for you in the city.

It might be beyond uber‘s tech.

Uber rqDs70 Jun 1, 2019

No it's ready, we just wait for Lyft to do it first to avoid criticism... Somehow everything Uber does is turned as a bad thing, so now we gotta wait for Lyft to 'inovate' first 🙄

Riders typically don’t spend time on the Uber app after requesting the ride, even more so once in the vehicle.

I think it would frustrate riders more than anything, they shouldn't have to get through more and more noise to finish their ride. If anything, uber should have an explore page with this kind of data

Facebook bdfunbff Jun 1, 2019

It could start as a new product experience where towards the end of the ride you get a notification for interesting things nearby. Sponsored content can be added to this later. Another option might be to show this content right after you’re matched with a driver when the riders attention is still on the app.

This sounds awful and explains why I close the fb app almost immediately every time I open it
