Wife wants expensive purse

Wife wants a $2,000 purse for her birfday.

I grew up a poor SOB and have a hard time justifying the purchase. Also I’m currently the only breadwinner and this doesn’t help with FIRE. Am I the asshole?

You can be cheap like TechLead and then get divorced. You’d also lose half your net worth that way. You have to decide whether it’s worth it.

There’s more to that story than money. He said she moved to Japan with their kid for ~6 months unless he found an apartment cause she couldn’t stand living with his parents, an arrangement she apparently previously agreed to.

So he has to buy her what she wants, no matter the price or he'll lose half of his net worth, is that how you picture a relationship?

TechLead tried to compensate by buying 2k purses and stuff. Money is just expected, it's not about being cheap.

Its probably more to do with living with her inlaws than not getting material goods. Being given expensive presents doesnt fix a damn thing. Like putting gold wallpaper over black mold

Eh, with that TC, unless this opens the floodgates for bigger purchases, 2k is a drop in the bucket.

That's my point, google. I doubt this will be a one off. On the other hand, maybe she's been super frugal so far and just wants this one fancy thing. IDK OP or his wife

2k over 60 yrs compounded at 10% is over 600k . The average s&p return. So yeah not a drop if you putting it to good use

If you are asking this question at all, it means you or your wife never makes expensive purchases often. She wants to splurge once in a while and that is OK if you can afford it. You do know a lot of other women spend much much more on a lot of different things right? From $40 lipstick to hundreds on shoes/dresses/ accessories to skincare/other care treatments and routines (do you know how many get regular, like monthly, facial/wax/haircuts/pedi/mani etc? And cost of them?). Some women are happy with drug store lipsticks ($6) and doing the beauty care routine at home. Just saying. Women are different.

    Don't over think.

Don't do it and see her reaction: if she dumps you because you didn't spend $2000 on a purse, that was the right decision.
She doesn't work and wants you to spend thousands on her? Lol, this girl is totally incompatible with your FIRE goal.

EDIT: if she takes care of the kids, this could make up for the fact she doesn't work.

Do you have kids? Offer to put that $2k into their college fund, and buy a Chinese knockoff

Not yet, maybe in 2-3y. I suspect her opinion about money will change after kids.

If you plan to have kids at all, and start preparing their college fund now, you’ll be at an advantage.

Number one rule of relationships: people don't change in fundamental ways. Maybe she will ask for a $1K purse instead of a $2K purse after you have kids. But the pattern of behavior will not change. Don't factor behavioral change into future plans.

Does she earn enough to justify this? Could be her TC. Could be her dedication to your kids or to your parents. Could be her dedication to your sex life. Could be her continual support for you in hard times. Is there anything that makes up for this in your book?

Thanks for the honest reply. She does make up for it in other areas, so I don’t feel terrible splurging, but she doesn’t realize expensive material goods only brings short term happiness.

Looks like all that’s remaining then is for you to get over your hang ups. We are all a product of our environment. That was useful growing up. That would have been useful if the environment hadn’t changed. As adults, we own the responsibility to adapt to the changed environment. Since you feel that she deserves it and the only problem is rooted in your childhood experiences... well I’m sure you know what my recommendation is.

Look at the resale value of the purse... you'll end up buying it.

Purchased several for my wife... then she stopped using them.

Then she wanted new ones, and I told her to sell the old ones.

She did and they hold their value after years... Now I dont buy; she basically sells them and buys a new one

halTired you don’t understand how fashion works. Stuff from old collections cannot be found anywhere, you need to buy second hand, that’s why might be expensive. It’s not c&a or or h&m or whatever low price you americans have that sells every year same ugly clothes.

If she really wants it... Happy wife, happy life.

Make sure to ask her a few months later if she still thinks it was worth it. Maybe it'll change her perspective for future purchases.

      Oct 13
    • Facebook WDWO10
It's relative to the context. 2k as a monetery value can be someone's 2-3 months rent. In designer goods, it is an entry point price. Personal value varies by the individual and their motivations.
