It’s always interesting to see a CEO really tell us what most of them are thinking but too scared to say.
The CEO drives up to work in a sweet car. "Wow," says the employee, "nice car!" The CEO responds, "Yes it is. If you work really hard this year, and put in all your efforts, then maybe just maybe, I can buy a second one."
One thing left out from this story is how hard the CEO works to run a successful business.
Tell this to really good engineers. Proof derivations are harder than any type of business management.
People who work long hours... how do you maintain a relationship? Exercise? Take care of your dog or even children, if you have them? Have hobbies outside of work? Healthy sleep schedule? Clean/do chores? I work under 40 hours most weeks and I cant even find the time to do so. Maybe I'm utilizing my time poorly, I'm a year out of college and adjusting was a bit hard. But when I was in the military, I had to work crazy hours and it was soul draining. I had no free time
Agreed. Been working for 2 years and adjusting at first was tough, the sitting all day got to me. I don’t even take a lunch at work to get out ASAP. This year I thought about taking some Online classes(7credits) but shit after spring semester I was burnt out. And ended dropping out of my summer semester cause of the OT I was putting in at work. I imagine people that work so much literally don’t do anything else but sleep and eat. I respect the hustle. But that is no way to live.
I consider exercise and short meditation breaks a part of my work. If they want me to be at my best, that is a part of it. I heard a saying once that I really liked. “When faced with a large problem to solve, a junior dev will jump straight to architecting a big complex solution from scratch. A senior dev will take a walk and think about it”. I know I butchered it and it’s a generalization, but I like the thought behind it. Also, remote work of at least routine WFH really helps with chores, family, sleep, etc.
Most successful folks I know work incredibly hard long hours. Only exception are folks who are incredibly good at bullshitting.
Amazon is total utter bullshit. Working long, hard and smart, leads to dog pictures and disgruntled employees.
Cleaning and chores, you can get help. Exercise and relationships, that's a tough one... Some people are fine and happy with this sacrifice, others do it but burn out, or don't and see what happens. If you think you'd be in the latter two, that company is just poor fit.
Of course he would say that, he's getting most of the profits 😑
