How prevalent is age discrimination in the recruiting world, especially for those trying to move into tech. I hear it gets progressively worse once you reach 40 years of age. Recruiters, any truth to this?
I am also curious, also, what age are you no longer considered in your prime when in tech? I feel like it is 45-48 if not in a senior/leadership position. Feel all discrimination goes out the door in leadership positions.
They're probably at Cisco or Oracle or something
I agree, although curious.. what exact do you mean by technical leadership? No direct reports?
Maybe not everyone in 20 years wants the pain of being senior people managers.
There was a time I reported to the CIO and was repulsed by the unfeeling callous ways the C suite talked about staff and i made a choice then to not be a part of that either you have to be a douche or a liar to pretend to be one in C suite no thank you
i agree you have to sell your sole to fit in at the higher levels.
Hugely prevalent. Microsoft in 2014 laid off 14k people 75% were over age 40. And then they tout how incredibly charitable they are ... lol.
I’m curious where the data is to support that? Where do old techies go when they near their expiry date? I thought msft was the place to be?
Lmao. Ask someone who was rif’d that year which age group was mostly represented in the audience. As for data, ask CELA.. they’ll give you that information... lol
The 2014 layoffs were in huge part all of Nokia being let go.
Less than 30%.
What are likely percentages of a 40+ entering the tech world successfully .. I would venture
Under 50%
Im not a recruiter, but ageism is certainly a thing in tech. 40yo or 20yo, if you can show you're operating under current practices it shouldn't be that big of a problem.
