My team is total bro-man. I just joined the team 2 months back, as G6 and my G8(lets call him John) has comments to leave on variable names and flows which on most occassionas belong to him. John makes me fix his bugs and introduces them in my branch when i co-work on a feature branch with him and childishly refuses to accept bugs he introduces. my manager loves him(lets call him Tom), and wont listen to a word against him. his PR process is governed by he himself and there is no standard. they both form a union and dont assign work in sprint planning and Tom keeps assigning John more and more work. The application is a childs play and is structured in the worse possible way. Its only 6 months old and is a total joke. There's another girl in my team(lets call Lisa) but they do same stuff with Lisa as well. Lisa doesn't pay much heed and behaves neutral. Lisa listens to all the crap John and Tom have to say and doesnt give a f I am pissed with this bro-man-ship! As a new joinee what can I do? switch teams/orgs? again look for new job TC: 115k
Learn from Lisa. Leetcode on the side.
You don’t have to provide names if the story is so short and the number of characters are less than handful.
An advice on the topic is much appreciated
You actually work, bro?
Don’t bro me. I am not bro 🥳
G6 G8 what? Wtf does that mean?
It means E3 (FB) -> E4 (FB)
Lgtfo --> leetcode or gtfo
That makes no sense, you leetcode To GTFO not leetcode Or GTFO.
TDLR: 1. For long term, GTFO for your sanity. 2. For short term, just do what John is asking you to do. LeetCode in b/w the time. I m in similar situation you described. John and Tom you described have worked together, so they will back up each other. Let me guess Tom, is newly promoted Manager (< 6 months) and John is newly promoted Lead (< 6 months). If above is true, it is long time Tom the Manager will learn how to be gr8 Manager. In my situation the Direction (let’s call him Dick), is on Tom’s and John side. In my story I tried to stay positive and contribute in meaningful way. When I had disagreements or pitch in better ideas (than Lead) with John, he would go behind my back and complain to Tom. Tom, asked me verbally to just follow what John is saying as he has worked here and we know him and he is right, without looking on what I bring to table. Ultimately, I have made to part away from company and have accepted offer at other place. Cerner is not the current company, let’s just call it C. I have worked at C for < 6 months. I concluded it is better for me to move on as I saw dead end in terms of career growth, unless I follow these guys. Apart from it, mental stability is important, I do not want all this drama (corporate politics). Regarding switching Teams, see if this is inherent culture at company or just this Team/Org. In my case, I have realized this is overall culture, at company. Pardon me to bring in race/ethnicity, but are all this people Indian and have background of working at Indian consulting companies. In my case, I see that is a common theme.
This is totally me!! 👩🏻💻
I think this situation you described is just not gender specific (bro culture, yeah I understand most times it is guys), hence generalizing and using as post subject is bit far, this can happen with female Manager too.
I guess it’s the Pinnacle of frustration for me
Document everything and look elsewhere
There isn’t much you can do about it in the current team. If you’re a new joinee, switching teams might not be easy as well. But if you like the company, it’s worth trying. Best is to gtfo.
Agree with zyzyxtech, it's better to gtfo.
