which role has more potentials? some people said they were all worse than software developer. is that true? thanks!
Some of the stupidest people in industry are data scientists. They are usually good for nothing. Real things are software engineering or Machine Learning research scientists.
It’s all about what you love doing, if you can get your mind off money. I know some really smart Data Scientists and SWEs. But I also know some extremely stupid Data Scientists and SWEs. So people who generalize SWE as being smartest or DS being the stupidest are really just exposing their inexperience and how little they know about the industry.
Data scientists I know are a lot smarter than most SWEs, and they aren’t code monkeys.
PM > SWE > DS/DE
For me it would be machine learning engineer then data scientist then Data engineer in order of decreasing value. I think of a machine learning engineer as equal to swe there is a lot of math needed for ml. Data engineer is everything in DS except for analysis mostly preprocessing getting data ready for analysis.
Don’t ever comment again. I do similar programming as sdes on my team but am also an expert on sql, data modeling and good with statistics as well.
I was generally speaking. This is my experience from applying for jobs
Roles don’t have any potentials. But People do. So real question is What’s your potential ?
I don’t know where people are getting their info, but I know a DS with a PhD and 6 yoe who makes 1.2M.
Which company?
If you got CS PhD and position at big tech: DS > MLE >>>>>>> DE/DA If just CS master: MLE > DS >>>>>>> DE/DA Usually DS at FAANG requires PhD. MLE has huge potential and markets, combine profits from both SDE and ML. Always good to learn both, and you’ll be unbeatable.
This is very valuable insight thanks! Why DE is so worse than DS? I thought DE could write better code than DS. Is DE really this bad?
All have lower prospects than SWE. Among them I would say all are more less equal and the three roles are interchangeable
Can you elaborate it a little bit? Why SWE has higher value? Is SWE the hardest to get into? Thanks!
