considering moving to London for a change of scenery and to give the kids some unique experiences. for anyone who has done it how has the experience been? wife and kids (11, 8) so any tips there are appreciated. i found a few posts about this internally, but not that many. are there internal groups about this that I’m missing? Just one thought...You will not be getting much of mobility there if you plan to move out of fb. But I assume you have already made up your mind and okay with that?
Do you mean that there aren’t many other tech companies?
Not exactly, there are moderate number of good employers though not exactly as big as Bay Area...but do not expect luxury in TC that you would have got in Bay Area, not even on hoping. But if you are okay to let it go then at least check other aspects with people who knows both of the worlds.
I wonder what your tc translates to in uk
Bay Area tech pays roughly 40% more than comparable London jobs
Must be nice to be in a position to sacrifice your career to improve your life, rather than sacrificing your life to improve your career. Also, must it be London? You might find more interesting places elsewhere in Europe.
Where would you suggest? Zurich?
What are you looking for? If you give jackshit about your career move to Spain. Good weather, good food, good people and good fun. The only downside is that you will commit career suicide. Zurich is nice and offers good TC but I wouldn't be thrilled of living surrounded by the Swiss. Depending on your preferences you might look at places like Berlin or Amsterdam. All in, Europe has a lot of variety in terms of TC, career prospects, QoL, etc.
If you’re getting an expat deal, take it and watch your TC spike 30%.
What is an expat deal?
The company pays to relocate you in corporate or long-term paid housing, puts your stuff in storage or ships it to you depending on the length of your expat package/company needs, pays for x number of visits home, and sometimes private school is covered.
I moved to London with my daughter for the same reason. We grew personally, but it was not the great experience that we thought it would be. Really evaluate your pay-it will prob will be significantly lower. Keep in mind that the pound is in significant flux. London is just or more expensive than the Bay area - esp if you will be paying for private schools. The mindset is much more traditional - obedience and conformity is expected in just about every aspect of life in London If you are used to innovation, pushing boundaries, and being inspired by big thinkers, you will be frustrated. Also, really evaluate the implact of Brexit on your plans.
I’d love to hear more. Did you do private school? Did your daughter enjoy the experience? Was the travel cool? Thanks!
Damn that TC! 😍
