gTech role at google?

Just had a quick phone screen with a recruiter for the gTech team. Is it truly still a hands on engineering position? She said it is primarily hands on with other more product management aspects as well. Any info?

My impression is that gTech is not respected internally as much as a normal SWE. They offered me a gTech interview after I failed my SWE onsite lol

Yeah, from what I see online it seems more like internal tech support than SWE... if it provides an in to the company it might be worth it? This would be my first interview with google

What role? Be aware that you’d still have to go through the full SWE interviews if you decide to transfer to an eng team.

TSE or something? I’m more concerned that it won’t actually be writing code... I don’t want to end up in an IT help desk role lol

I think that is the same ladder as TSC, WSE, and PTM. If that is the case, then you’ll definitely be writing code. But more on the scripting side and, if lucky, web development. Also expect lots of meetings (relative to eng), handling support tickets, and non-technical managers. gTech is a business org after all, focusing on product support.
