offer 1 - 400k TC - 200 base + 180 bonus + 20k signon at hedge fund - IC tech lead role backoffice offer 2 - 300k TC - 230 base+ 70 rsu - at big public internet company - eng manager role Can't move any numbers. Final offers NYC EOY - 9 Long term goals are to become a director/VP. I also hopped around last 3 years so I want to make sure this job I stay at least 3 years. Just wanna gut check here from tech people. Will being in finance make it harder for me to get leadership roles in the future?
Disagree strongly with poll results. The Engineering Manager role is way more important than the IC role if Director / VP is your goal ! For the bonus at hedge fund lots of things need to click together (you might lose your job as well!). Also an EM role helps you get an EM role at FAANG, an IC role at TS coops you up in the financial sector. To me the EM role is highly preferable
Whats going to make you happier? Both are fine offers. So. Forget the extra few dollars, which one is going to make you happy enough to stay to earn it?
100k is more than a few dollars and can buy some amount of happiness ;)
Happiness is not for sale. You can shove money in the misery hole but the reality is that at either salary, this person should be reasonably comfortable if they aren’t stupid. The 100k is only really first year and the pay structure is also very different - immediate cash vs company participation for example. There are some who will look at nothing but the raw TC number. If thats you, great, have at it. My experience has been that how that money is structured and what your long term plan is has more impact than raw TC. What do you value? Choose the job that furthers that. Do benefits matter? Type of work? Team? Management snd leadership?
