I’m definitely a fan of Sam Harris and also consider myself a card carrying liberal. But we have a problem. I think this episode of his podcast really illistrates an important issue were totally missing and being blinded by this white colonial guilt “wokeness”. Its not what you might think it is. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/making-sense-with-sam-harris/id733163012#episodeGuid=b8e65cbef04647c8ba381dc1f0a78468 Strongly recommend listening to it in its entirety and thinking about it rather than recoiling into knee jerk reactions. Happy podcasting...

Yeah, not sure how this guy came to be known as intellectual. Pretty weak sauce
The TLDR for the folks that can’t be bothered is western liberals for some reason feel like we can only be critical of western cultures. We can’t criticize non western cultures because of colonial guilt. Meanwhile in these cultures, women are having the clits chopped off, beaten, jailed, or killed for not drinking the koolaid, wanting an education, not wearing full body head dresses because some 1400 year old religious text says the only way to control the sexual urge of a man is to completely conceal a woman like she doesn’t exist. And forget about LGBTQ issues in non-western cultures. Those poor folks are likely killed and wouldn’t dare out themselves. It’s so entrenched that Ahmadinejad himself said that gays don’t exist in Iran. We criticize Israel for attacking the Palestinians, and it can be warranted, but we don’t criticize Palestinians for their oppression of woman. You never see the women because they’re hidden in some basement. The point is be consistent with our criticism. If you care about equality, then that doesn’t stop outside of western cultures. When you are apathetic to the damages 1400 year old cultures are doing to people, you are giving power to the oppressors. I mean this should be obvious. If you didn’t get this from the podcast, then there’s something wrong with you and you’re too political with defensive political shields up.
Yeah, he is able to highlight this most glaring hypocrisy from the left. He’s just like someone who’s about to wake up to the fact this entire belief system is built on sand
So it’s either be critical of everyone or you can’t be critical at all? You can’t only be critical of the worst and most egregious? In other words, you’re saying it’s better to embrace Israel and ignore Palestine vs only being critical of Israel. This is dumb dumb dumb.
Sam Harris fucking rambles so goddamn much he’s near impossible to listen to. The guy is so far up his own ass he can’t see daylight.
I think the point that Sam Harris is missing is that everyone already knows there’s tons of bad stuff going on around the world. The point isn’t to criticize every single bad thing. The thing is to point is to criticize the bad whenever you see it. And guess what? When it’s happening on the other side of the world or when it’s not happening to your family or friends, you don’t see it as much. I don’t anyone out there thinks that it is morally correct to hold our own culture to a higher standard than we hold other cultures. But we also want to make efforts efficient. And we can’t efficiently criticize cultures that are far away. I don’t get to vote in Britain, or China, or Saudi Arabia. Like if I caught you murdering my girlfriend, it wouldn’t make it any less worse for me if you tried to explain that other girlfriends are getting murdered on the other side of the world by other people. I can’t physically go after everyone equally, although I would if I could.
Ya it’s a stupid argument. And the people that agree with it don’t even think about it for a second. They just hear “liberals are hypocrites” and nod along.
Another example: if I’m cleaning the bathroom, don’t yell at me about how the kitchen isn’t clean
It sounds like person A is criticizing Person B for doing something bad. And then Sam Harris, rather than also criticize person B, had decided to criticize Person A without good reason. Which is not a good look for Sam Harris
He’s trash.
Why?
He’s saying that white supremacy isn’t the same as jihadism because white supremacy doesn’t expect virgins in the after life? Is he stupid or are his listeners? White supremacy is a political movement that uses violence to terrorize people, much like Islamic Terrorism. Just because the nit picky details don’t align doesn’t make white supremacy any less of an extremist movement. Also he argues it isn’t as popular. Obviously doesn’t live in the South. He’s a moron. Just because he uses a low husky NPRish voice, doesn’t mean he has a point. Or is even vaguely coherent.
