I see that it’s not unusual for a SWE with some years of experience to break the 350k TC mark. Can Product Managers do the same at certain companies? And/Or is it easier to move from product management into higher leadership roles? I’m not interested in becoming or staying a middle manager forever and I have a SWE background but am considering other roles like partner engineer that can lead to PM.
Is it easy? No Is it possible? Yes
Yes but would take longer than swe
TC is usually lower, but it is easier to move into leadership roles once at a higher level.
Several things. The higher TCS are usually in the bay area. Comp range is same for pm and swe at msft at the same band. A lot more swe jobs than pm, and therefore tends to be harder to land. The role itself varies a lot much accross companies, and therefore skills and experiences. Knowing how to code is an easy transferable skill. Anyway all said and done totally possible to land such an offer. Finally growth and impact is easier to show, but at the higher levels, because the strategy, and the what (pm) becomes a lot more important than how (dev) . You will see that a lot of tech execs even at msft come from pm background than dev. Keep trying.
