First fang, super excited but also nervous. Any tips on how I can make the mose impact and do the right thing? Any tech I must run through. in my last company I complained a lot about tech decisions, company culture etc etc. Dont want to do that during this transition. want to genuinely try and make things better and take feedback constructively sde 2 age 30 Tc 235
All tech is decentralized, I have worked at many fortune companies and I’ve never seen anything like it. No real processes or standards. Tech teams just deploy whatever they want
You must not have worked at Apple then. We rule when it comes to “deploy whatever, wherever, whenever, as many different ways”

Some differences in Amazon: 1. People are not necessarily nice, and they may question your decision, so have a hard skin at work. Sime people are aasholes and will only question you to make themselves good, try to ignore such people. 2. Review your work: Ensure anything significant you’re working on is reviewed by someone higher up. 3. Document everything: Any design decisions, cross team commitments, meetings notes etc. 4. Top down decision making: Amazon is not very transparent and most decision come too down, and if you try to challenge a lot, you may get into trouble. 5. Principal+ engineers in Amazon are smart ( junior sde1/2 could be good to very bad), so make sure you work with them on regular basis.
+1 to document everything. Ops...is really going to suck. Just be prepared.
>> in my last company I complained a lot about tech decision Might want to review the LP - Have Backbone; Disagree and Commit before you start. Seriously, it is good to disagree and challenge others view points. But in the end if you can’t accept the another point of view once the decision is made then you will be miserable and hate your job. Also once you start, things will seem chaotic and dysfunctional. However resist the urge to make suggestions for changes/improvements at the start. Take the time and find out the “why” it is done that way. Sometimes the answer is meh (so then write your narrative on what & why If should be changed) but other times you might surprised at the answer.
Lol 30 and SDE2? 235k you say? Feel sorry for you. You'll have to compete with 24-25 year olds for your L6.
And toxic assholes like Spheres@19
Why is it considered toxic to say the harsh reality? Most new grads get promoted to SDE 2 within 1.5-2 years after starting as SDE 1. Average new grad age is 22-23 years, so you have 24-25 year old SDE 2 making $235k+. Not sure why you think reality is toxic.
Is the vesting 5/15/40/40?
Yes, sadly.
So when people post Amazon TC, do they post actual first year TC or do adjust for this an add 25% of their equity?
All of our in house software sucks (#frugality) and the culture makes it difficult to quickly get anything answered from anyone else
Sales software maybe ... what about tech tools ?
Compared to other FANGs maybe, but not to other tech companies. I have seen worse.
