technical role to Program mgmt, wrong career move?

i am burned out and dont have will and courage to keep jumping in new waggon everytime there is new technology comes out. started with teaching and thru many roles changes now at engineering position. i am seeing a new shift in industry, wondering if i should shift to PM or TPM eventually. in my early 40s i am willing to give my 100% and learn, as long as i dont have to keep shifting gears every few years, do you think its better move? or a dead career?

Get into people management, TPMs are dime a dozen.

Issue with people management isn’t- harder to switch roles between companies People managers are expected to be - coders + manager

I agree, but there is a growth potential. At TpM, you are mostly an expense, liability. A very few people see any value add in them. They are like punching bag if things go bad, and first to be targeted. I know, I am generalizing but it is true in most cases.

It depends on the individual. I started out coding and moved to TPM, was v successful for over a decade, and then eventually went into engineering management. I had a friend who went from dev to TPM and it was horrible for him. YMMV.

It depends on the company..some TPM works are just exactly like PM works but because it's a tech system it's called TPM.
