Don't proceed. Outsourcing phone interviews is a terrible idea. Any interview is meant to get familiar with one other, as an individual and as a member of the team, company and organization.

Or maybe leadership respects the internal team enough to let them do their day job rather than phone screen countless unqualified applicants...

Even the most unqualified applicant deserves the minimum professional courtesy of being interviewed by an employee rather than an outsourced consultant because even they should learn a thing or two about the company culture by asking questions toward the end.

It does! I was sent a link to schedule first interview with karat and if we clear that then they would bring us on site.

This is likely an agency process. We don’t outsource. TA handles all first calls through onsite & offer. Not outsourced

I'm on the hiring committee for catalog eng. Us and store front have begun piloting using karat to phone screen candidates. We're a huge company so there is inevitably some bad sectors of every department. Sure, there are toxic teams, but that's never been my experience.

I believe we still control the questions and the decision to bring candidates on site after the initial screen.

I'm sort of mixed on what I think about this change, but for us it's a capacity issue. We don't have the headcount on our interview team to handle the hiring rate we're targeting, without overloading our eng managers. I have had a hard time balancing phone screens, so I'm hopeful this will help. This phone screen really should just be a basic technical test to see if you have the base skills for consideration, I've run a ton of these, they're not super hard if you've codes professionally for a year or so.
