πŸ”₯ πŸŒ‰ or not to πŸ”₯ πŸŒ‰?

Scenario: your employer has treated you bad, is disrespectful, and you tried everything to grow within, from promotion to working on other teams, nobody even notices you. You haven't had a raise in about 5 years despite your continued efforts. You get an unfair performance plan and exit it in 30 days with success, but you feel defeated and burnt out. You think once you get a new job, you'll never come back to be treated like this again. Then you find a new job and think how you should leave. Question is: do you put in a notice or treat them exactly as they have treated you (leave without notice?)

Damn what're they up to over there at IBM

Bruh! Get me out of here! Lol In all seriousness, I just think it's my department that is poorly managed, I still believe the company is a great place to work!

They just acquired Red Hat.

Give same day notice.

Red Hat Abe_Fr0man Jul 9, 2019

Don't treat people based on how they treat you - be confident enough to know how you want to treat people, and just do it. Despite the circumstances. Even when it's hard. I'd give the notice...

IBM fkui OP Jul 9, 2019

Sure.. Someone punches you in the face and you just say "it's ok, I know you're upset, let's talk". It's easier to pretend to be the better person when you're not the one involved. Don't be a hypocrite.

IBM AbeQ15 Jul 9, 2019

Reading this I'm wondering if all these bad experiences you're having are not just because you're an asshole. You literally asked which way you should handle it, if you've already made your decision why even fucking post in the first place?

Less of an issue with leaving large companies, but when leaving SMBs or early/mid stage startups you are very likely at some point in your career in the same city to interview with folks that might have back channel information on your departure. As a manager, I have decided not to hire someone based on a back channel reference with several people I knew who worked with the canidate a couple years earlier and who quit with zero days notice, which impacted the project they were on as they did no knowledge transfer and destroyed their documentation rather than sharing it. Maybe in those intervening years that person matured and wouldn't do it again, but there was no way I was going to take that risk.

So you believe everything you hear? I've seen people get their reputation unfairly marred by back channel ... lies. So much for independent thought.

Amazon x31dH Jul 12, 2019

When I have worked with folks for multiple years crossing paths at different companies over decades, and all those people say the same thing about the canidate, I would be a negligent not to listen to them. Of course I'm going to listen to people who I have worked closely with and who I know deliver reliably and raise the bar, over hopeing that these folks who have earned my trust with their blood sweat and tears are simply lying to me to "unfairly mar" the canidate whom I am supposed to magically believe won't pull the same shit again.

Professionalism isn't about them, it's about you.

IBM fkui OP Jul 9, 2019

I get what you mean... I also think respect is a two way street. I'd never treat my employees like garbage, especially the ones I know are working hard for the success of the company. But, if I do it, I know I'll be the villain...

same day notice and GTFO then never look back.

Speak from experience? What BU are you in? How many years?

IBM uncle bob Jul 10, 2019

Give notice. You never know if someone will end up crossing your path later down the road in an employment situation. You don’t want the only difference you don’t get hired for a job is because β€œya Tony know him, he just ghosted out when he was at IBM, not sure we can count on him”

Intel Spikiera Jul 13, 2019

Leave without notice and then what? You get some joy from vengeance? For them, they might not even care. If you remain professional, at least you are the bigger person and it would be a more mature act. At the end of the day, it's up to you, I understand that it would make you feel better by leaving without notice, and maybe that joy is what you're looking for. If that's the case then do it, it's not like you will ever come back to that company anyway.

IBM vaGinni Jul 13, 2019

So you're saying it's ok for them to "not even care" but it's frowned upon if I don't? Double standards don't you think?

Intel Spikiera Jul 13, 2019

I'm not saying it's ok for them to not care, I'm telling you they won't care even if you leave without notice
