Both are entry level SDEs Amazon: SDE I wepay: Software Engineer vote for wepay initialy, then amazon recruiter call me again today, to give me more money. TC: Amazon: intialy 170K Seattle, now 200k in SF (north california offices, dont know which office exactly) wepay: 200+k Palo Alto Amazon (AWS team) - pros: - technology is great at AWS, scope is bigger - work hard and learn more - cons: - PIP, I have asked two of my friends who are in AWS, they have not met anyone who are piped yet. quote "just work normally, not watch youtube everyday, you can survive" wepay - pros - WLB, engineering team seems good - cons - not big name company I have listed the Pros and Cons above, I am hoping the Blind Community can share some thoughts/ideas/suggestions on how to decide. UPDATE: I am thinking working in either company for 2+ years and jump to other Big companies or startups. Does Amazon or wepay make difference when it appears in my resume? Thank you so much! #engineering #amazon #wepay
I understand the attraction to a big name company, but I'm certain you'll regret aws. I used to work at aws and I also got an offer at WePay. The project at wepay seems fun, the team seems cool. I haven't started yet because I am waiting on other offers, but I have been at aws and it's terrible even if you never get pipped. If you can nail aws, you can nail other faangs in the future.
thanks for your advice. would you mind sharing which org and office for your previous experience at aws. it is totally ok if you are not comfortable to disclose the info. thank you!
I wouldn't share the org. But it's an aws service in seattle. Not Ec2 or s3 or any of the popular services. It's was also not a sev1 service. Still a shitty code, and lots of ops work. The real worse part is the lack of job security. Going to work and always having the thought of pip in your mind does your mental health no good.
You said scope is bigger lol. But as SDE 1 at AWS, most likely your scope will be ops for at least a year.
no individual feature dev or design?
Since the Chase acquisition, things have changed. Many of the staff-level engineers have left so it's hard to find a mentor or get good feedback on your work. Benefits like healthcare aren't great anymore (high deductible). People are generally nice though and the workload is light. Good place if you can't cut it at or don't want more aggressive environments, don't want to deal with jerks, or have good WL balance.
The TC offered is more than what many senior engineers make at WePay.
choose Amazon if you are on visa.
Why? Does WePay not sponsor?
OP, what did you choose at the end and why? I have an offer from WePay and I’m very torn.
Sometimes it’s not YouTube but your manager can get you into trouble if he thinks you are not a good fit no matter whatever you do. HR will not listen and you will have only 2 choices, attempt pip which is quite frankly next to impossible or leave with severance. Also watch out for OLR which happens twice in a year. My first hand experience at Amazon
may I know what OLR is short for? thanks!
Organization level review, where usually you manager needs to give list of top performers and bottom performers. And manager is at discretion to pick their choices.
