“I come from a country where tipping doesn’t exist so i don’t tip when I go out to eat”. You’re not in that country anymore. In the US, we have to tip our wait staff. If you want to avoid restaurants to not tip, that’s odd, but do that. But if you go out, tip your wait staff. I’ll preface this by saying I’m 22, just graduated. Hispanic male, parents are immigrants but I’m American by birth. Most of my friends still work service, some of them work as wait staff, including my gf, who has worked as a waitress at two restaurants in the last 10 months or so. I worked retail for over 5 years at the same store. Joined at 16 in high school, worked part time through my first 3 years of college and by 21 I was an assistant manager and key holder. 4th year of college I was an intern. Let me show you how restaurants work, or at least the two she worked at. Restaurant 1 was part of a giant chain of restaurants owned by a giant company. paid her $3 an hour plus tips. No comp if she has a bad day. She had a few bad days where she made less than TX min wage, which is $7.25 an hour. Restaurant 2 is also a giant chain owned by a different giant company, paid her $4/hr plus tips. If she makes less than a $12/hr average on that shift, the restaurant comps her pay at $12/hr that day. Most days averaged at between $15-$20 an hour, but she had several days where the restaurant had to comp her pay, usually 3-4 a month. The conversation then becomes that the waitstaff has to earn their tip. Your waitstaff know what they’re doing. It’s very rare that your waitstaff won’t “earn” their tip. Nobody is perfect. You ever gone out to eat and your order got messed up? 99.99999% of the time, it’s not your waitstaff’s fault, it’s the kitchen’s fault. And if your order gets messed up, it’s really not a big deal to let them know and your waitstaff will get you a new corrected plate. Funny thing is my gf never got a $0 tip from a table who had a messed up order, she always corrected it and they tipped well. She only got $0 tips from tables that went perfectly. She never saw a coworker that did something that truly deserved a no tip, and I’ve never had a server that did something that warranted no tip. If you can afford to go to restaurants, you can afford to tip generously, minimum 15%. When I go out to restaurants I tip minimum 15% (usually it’s more like 20% or more if I have a particularly cool server), or $5, whichever is greater. Making the kind of money I make now gave me a completely different perspective on money. At my retail job I capped out at $13.50 an hour. Serving tables is more physically and mentally exhausting than you think, and my gf would be absolutely crushed working 8 hour days and coming home with $60. How would you feel? Finally I’ll say this. We make tons of money. Tip a little extra, you can fucking afford it. I make 2x the median household income in my county. Many of you it’s 3x, 4x, fucking 10x or more even in HCOL areas. Tip you waitstaff. TC 97K YOE < 1
Posts like these make me want to stop tipping altogether. Good job OP
I'll tip, but tipping culture is stupid. Restaurants need to increase their prices and increase their pay. It makes no sense that a person's livelihood is based on how generous/rich their customers are that month. Restaurants absolutely love when people make arguments like this because it puts the responsibility on us and let's them keep their obfuscated prices. Stop blaming people for not tipping, blame the companies that profit off this model. But still, tip your waiters, but also go out of your way to dine at restaurants that don't accept tips.
Agreed. That’s how it should be, but it isn’t how it is. Until that day comes, I’ll keep tipping
This. I don't know how a restaurant can get away with paying $3 an hour.
Restaurants should pay living wages to their employees. I am not responsible for cheapskate restaurant owners stealing from their employees and expecting their customers to pay
Don't dine out then, servers count on tips.
I will dine out and not pay tips. That will force those cheapskate restaurant owners to pay living wages or shut down their business
In capitalism you get paid for the value you provide not on emotions and need. I think the real person worthy of tips is the cook, not someone who lifted the plates by 10 meters.
I don't know why it's put on customers to pay a tip..... I don't mind paying the service fee or tip to waiter as a standard fee instead of guilt tripping me... Just say something like standard 15% tip/service fee and I'll take it in consideration before choosing a restaurant... it's on the restaurant or doordash to pay them..... It leads to a vicious cycle where the restaurant pays sub or close to minimum wage instead of market rates... I don't mind waiters making 100k an year....but why should it be done by guilt tripping customers
Totally agreed as an immigrant who moved here. As much as I think restaurants should be paying their staff well, it's not the case. How do Americans think of pickups and to-go orders? I tip less in such cases like around 10% as I can mostly afford it. But does the staff expect it?
To go runners usually make a decent hourly wage
I tip as well now that i can afford it. if you're picking up from a restaurant or fast food place, the runner is usually making minimum wage at least. particularly in fast food. It's usually servers and waiters at sit-in restaurants who do not make the same minimum wage as other workers
Please pay on my behalf as well. Increase your tips to 30%. Thank you.
Typical Amazon.
I’ll take that as a compliment. In case, you disagree, please remember that there are people like me so you also tip higher. Ty!
People that don't tip are legitimately inferior
People that don’t donate money to the homeless are legitimately disgusting
Those are definitely not the same thing
Your gf doesn’t earn much and we need to tip. Okay 👍🏼
