"worst team at databricks" = think a nonessential team at the very boundary of engineering, like security or cloud ops or similar. Talent is super questionable and I'm worried about how much I'll learn/the difficulty of the projects. On the other hand I feel like I could have a huge impact really easily. "best team at ramp" = core product team working on cutting-edge stuff. Talent is super high and work is super interesting and there are constant posts and talks about it. This is for a SWE Intern role. Databricks has a way better name and reputation than Ramp but I wonder if that alone is enough justification to pick Databricks, even if the particular team at Ramp is more "cutting-edge". How do you balance this tradeoff between company name and team?
Databricks any day.
Is the team a concern for an internship? Or is company name and reputation always more important?
Original post makes you sound biased against a “non-core team” so if you’re prejudiced against doing “fringe work” at Databricks and soaking up the learning, then you should skip it. If you can get over yourself and get out what you put in, the brand is strong and the relatable skills would likely transfer better to another job. You can always look into hustling harder and pick up tasks from other teams if you find their work interesting too.
Your proxies for what makes a worst and best team are kinda weird
Security or cloud ops is not a nonessential team. It's a different domain in Software engineering. As an intern choose what interests you though.
If you're an intern you're probably overthinking it. Go with the work that interests you; in both cases the engineers you're working with will be on a totally different level, and if you can't learn from them it's almost certainly you, not them.
you think this is a question of trade offs and priorities, but that’s because you have much to learn young paduan. when buying a house you want the worst house on the best block. ramp sucks period. best turd is still a turd. a poor team at dbrx is good for you. as a know nothing noob you have much more ability relative to the employees so you are much more likely to get a call back. the point of internship is not to learn. it’s to get a call back. even if you don’t get that call back, you want the most prestigious name possible on your CV. ramp in the opposite of that.
Any decent intern will get a return offer. As an intern you want to learn, pad the resume, and figure out your interests.
Hello intern! First thing you will learn in eng is that the team itself doesn't define impact. In fact, the teams that are usually resource constrainted have the best intern projects! Stop with your over judgmental attitude. join the better brand name if you only care about resume.
Ramp is shit snobby leaders
And they shill so hard on blind
