“For those who are remote and who live near a Google office, we hope you’ll consider switching to a hybrid work schedule. Our offices are where you’ll be most connected to Google’s community,” writes chief people officer Fiona Cicconi in an internal memo obtained by news outlets this week. “Going forward, we’ll consider new remote work requests by exception only.” According to the note, employees not already designated as remote will now have their badge swipes tracked to ensure they’re appearing in the office three days per week; managers can factor their absences into performance reviews. https://qz.com/google-remote-work-policy-reversal-ironic-1850520264
Swear to god 5 days in is coming in a few years max unless we shift back to a employee’s market. Cross your fingers on the supposed new bull run but I’m worried about the credit crunch coming…
Yep things will be in employers favor for the foreseeable future. The worse is yet to come. Anyone who thinks we’re going back to 2021-2022 highs is absolutely delusional
Do they even have desks for everyone? There was a post asking people to come in on alternative days.
No, some orgs specifically have a policy of no more then 2 days in office due to lack of desks
Great! Traffic is going to suck even more!
I really don't understand why anyone is confused about this. Politicians and business leaders say what they have to say, when they have to say it. It's all about power and money, and nothing else. We are all just on the receiving end of this. Politicians and business leaders endorsed the lockdowns because they didn't want to lose the next election or get sued because they didn't act "out of an abundance of caution". Now, everybody is supposed to get back to the office because (surprise!) the lockdowns crushed business activity and hurt commercial real estate values and that affects taxes, and real estate investments. We don't have much say in that. As long as there are remote jobs available, we can vote with our feet but most of the big companies are going back to the office. Some of those eg: Salesforce, Meta, Google) are themselves landlords and have to protect those investments too.
Yeah this is very much a political thing - someone else said it well on here but it’s about power. If there’s no one in the office, the state won’t give much power to the corporations who get tax breaks and other benefits (aka benefits for bringing jobs to a city). So they are crushing the workers under their feet to gain power again over the working class. It’ll backfire though - all we have to do in every election is keep voting out these bad people and add more protection for workers. Solidarity my friends.
Finally a sensible reply
That is so wrong.
The baton (quite literally!) has been passed back from employees to the employers. Activist employees and employee strikes are no longer to be seen. Employees have been whipped back into shape and compliance. Haha
Good that Atlassian is remote first. What would you do if they declared RTO? Would you think your ass is getting whipped back to compliance too?
Everyone's ass is getting whipped back into compliance everywhere. And that's fine - reality of the employer employee relationship. How's Bloomberg treating you - I doubt employees have any rights or expectations in a private company. Similar to Twitter.
There are lots of good reasons to get people colocated but none of those are driving RTO. What’s driving RTO is the desire to avoid a commercial real estate crash, which could trigger depression level defaults and bank runs. It really is that simple.
If it's so simple, where's the research backing this? Pls enlighten
Kdkd10 - If you know how to infer something from history and pattern then you don’t need any research work. I agree with AkuH44
I'm team matching for a remote role in Google. I hope this won't go into effect this year. I would rather starve than go back to the office.

So, does this mean someone living in Chicago, can work for a team in Seattle out of the Google Chicago office?
For now, probably. Im expecting they will eventually change it so teams are encouraged to have everyone relocate to the team’s main office.
