Hi all, I’m thinking of focusing my career on PM and would greatly appreciate the communities feedback. I’m a Chief Digital Officer with 15 years experience in Digital Marketing & eCommerce (DtC and B2B) driving digital transformation, startups etc. The secret to my success has been an obsessive focus on the CX/UX and I’ve applied PM principles to over a dozen website redesigns + build outs of affiliate platforms + B2B website experiences (seamlessly brought together over half a dozen platforms into one). I don’t code but I directly manage an offshore development agency for builds, maintenance and evolution of our environments. Familiar with agile / scrum etc. I also directly manage a team of 12 digital/ecommerce professionals. The past quarter I took a Cornell course to receive certification for PM and although I’ve never formally been in an ‘product manager’ role it all seemed very obvious / aligned with websites / experiences I’ve built throughout my career. I like the idea of putting aside eCommerce and Digital Marketing to just focus on making an amazing product… rather than it being something I chip away on the side after hitting all my other eCommerce and Digital Marketing objectives… Does this background qualify me for any Senior/Director PM roles? Anyone looking for this profile? I’m willing to start at a lower title but current TC: ~$375. Can I find something at $400+ or am I priced out being that my background isn’t officially in ‘tech’ and I’m not a SWE? Finally, obviously looking to put the effort in but WLB is a consideration. Thanks is advance! #pm #product #productmanager #programmanager
Job requirements are a suggestion at this point (especially for product management which is largely a black box to get into). My background is in consulting (although I did study CS in school) and got a PM2 offer where the requirements for the job said 4 years product experience and 8 in total (I only have 3 in total and none in product). Just shoot your shot and try to give them a reason to give you a chance (your experience already sounds pretty impressive). As one final suggestion you might want to look at smaller or pre-ipo companies.
Thanks for the perspective!
