Hi everyone, Needs some guidance related to career path. I’m joining AWS as a TAM next week, but not sure if it’s a good path for the longer term from career perspective. I accepted this position to have a faang club in my resume so I can have better opportunities in the future. Could anyone share on how to navigate the path in long term Yoe:12 Tc:170k #tech #amazon #aws
TAM is a safe role right now - it pays for itself via enterprise support contracts which many companies need since they are clueless on cloud. I’m using it to learn and get certs and make connections. Kinda easy at times too just keep the customer happy and keep manager off your back
TAM is not a good path for career growth. If you are technical, get inside amazon as TAM but then over time 1-2 years take an internal transfer as an SA. SA would be a better option for long term career growth in AWS.
Thank you for the response. I find myself more comfortable in technical area, is that easy to make an internal transfer to SA after 6-12 months ?
Right now the economy is slow and there is not of open roles for internal transfer. I think in 6-12 months the scenario will change. I suggest that while on the TAM tole start building relationships with SA’s and SA manager. Go above and beyond to help them. When the right time comes use these relationships to take an internal transfer. The transfers are much easier if the hiring manager already knows you. Strategize from Day 1 and you will be fine. Once you are inside AWS, start preparing for the SA role. That way you can be prepared when the time comes. Don’t disclose your plans with your current manager or anyone else until you are ready to make the move. There is an established process approved by HR for internal transfer. Many people use it. The process is fairly straightforward.
