What are some companies in the valley with somewhat hard interviews for Sr+ SWE role? I'm looking for companies I can use to practice & improve my interviewing skills before going to the big companies like Google & Facebook. I've heard Cloudera, Hortonworks, Amazon are great for practicing. Any other companies? Preferably small startups since I have no intention of joining very early stage start ups (H1-B reasons).
Uber
Are Uber interviews considered hard compared to Amazon or fb or Google?
No - however I found fb and amazon too very easy . Companies like two sigma or even smaller stage startups would have harder interviews, don't try large companies( that includes uber). There was a startup that took 16 interviews (some 2:1) - it was an awesome experience.
kind of rude to spin up a company's time and resources if you have no intention of even considering them
If that guarantees you 50-100k more a year, why not?
It's one thing if you would actually consider them, is another to be intentionally wasting their time for your benefit. I just imagine how I would feel if I was the a hiring manager and found that out... Grow your skills and your resume through good work, then rock the interview that way.
are planning to give phone screen alone or want to try full loop ? if so how are going to plan it .. i mean taking off for every practice and original full loop ?
I don't want to get into discussion around morality. Having practice companies is part of my strategy to prepare. it's nearly impossible to get real-life practice through gainlo etc. I've tried it & while gainlo is good, i don't feel the same pressure as I'd feel in a real interview. I'm looking for 2 full loops. Getting the time should not be much of a problem as I'm approaching parental leave of 6 weeks from which I can spare few half days for interviews. I anticipate the entire effort taking no more than a week off my bonding time, so it's an OK trade-off.
gd for you.. you have parental leave :) good luck
Mortality? Finish him!!! Flawless victory.
Mock interviews will get you pretty well prepped. But intentionally wasting other companies time is messed up. At least interview with the possibility of accepting a position and don't be a dick about it. That being said, Amazon and Palantir will have hard loops. Unless you can solve hard problems routinely, I don't know how these burn loops will help. If you fail one, you'd want some time to understand why and to reverse engineer what you did wrong. So you'd need to space them out. Cramming them in sequence before G or FB might just give you a false sense of security. My recommendation is to just do mock interviews with some trusted peers and really rehearse the behavioral questions.
thanks Segal, I agree I need to prepare well before these loops. I've already started doing that with CtCI & leetcode.
also accepting offers from these companies are not completely out of question. the chances are lower, but if the company positively surprises me with culture, compensation & work, it's a possibility (assuming I do well enough to pass the interviews). Admittedly, most of these will be very low on the list though until that happens.
I always read and heard including on quora that Dropbox, Nosql and Palantir are harder. Also add Jane street here. Not sure why you are restricting to a location. Just apply and interview. Is it too hard to take a few hours of flight and stay for a couple of them when it's all paid by the interviewer
Try Yahoo, If you don't get an offer you def need more praftice before trying the bigger companies.
try quora and dropbox. toughest interviews in the valley.
