Manager is not interested in career growth

My manager only does bi-weekly 1:1s, asks about projects and done. No talk about career progression or anything. Doesn't ping any time. It is great for coasting. However, when I ask for career progression, she mentions project scope is not big enough for promo and no plan for next 1.5 years at least. Doesn't have a gap doc or anything. What should I do? Just coast or work harder or try to move internally? TC - 320K as L4

You move externally if you want more money. Always.

Such bad managers all around. Hope Google gets rid of such poor leaders like Meta and flattens the company to do some actual core work. Such leaders (not all) have become like project managers to get updates and share with leadership. They should launch rate the manager internal tool

Meta did not get rid of these scumbags at all

I try! Manager just says project itself will not be enough to show impact for promotion. Project is not in prod, without issues or high traffic, there aren't even efficiency problems in system. Project will have low traffic so manager says can't make promo case.

omg let me make it clear. your manager doesn’t care about you and your goals or promo. actively look for work on your own, or change teams or change jobs. don’t waste your time begging your manager for career advancement others are saying bad manager but they are missing a major point. your manager is up front and honest with you that you are spinning in place. that’s gold. now it’s up to you to do something with that clear information. your manager isn’t your mom. and here you are asking us wtf you should do. make a damn life choice. you are L4 not a fresher

Have you started trying to put forth a career growth plan or ask for stretch opportunities from manager. Some leaders wants employees to take the initiative. Your manager can just be not interested but you should try taking a initiative and then see the next steps. I have leaders who declare that it is up to employees to take the first step and then they pitch in.

I took initiative. My manager says things like the entire project we are working on, we are basically building for smaller regions. Manager is like without launching in US, impact not enough for promotion. Thing is, launching in US is not in my hands and very high up my level.

My manager used to care and we always had these discussions. But now we rarely do because there’s no point at the moment. Going L5>L6 is near impossible with all the shit going on and quota caps. I could get “O” every time and it clearly wouldn’t matter.

Mine is 4 to 5. It's not good to be in this state for 4 to 5.

not_evil if your manager is from the same region of India as you are it’s a straightforward promo to L6. Proof is in my org where L5 with L2 like communication and leadership skills got promo to L6
