I joined exactly 10 years ago as a college hire and didn’t sell anything from ESPP and stock vesting. Gained a solid million dollar from stock alone. TC 280k
Nice! Will you continue to hold for another 10?
Sure. Laziness paid off in this case lol
How so? If you bought say SMCI or NVDA with partial diversification 5 years back that would go 50x / 20x up. Say you invested even 100k in each — that 200k would have been ~7M alone. My friend joined NVDA exactly 5 years back with 800k joining rsu. Though he sold small chunk around previous peak, his pretax stock holding atm is 10M+.
Big brain
This can’t be right MSFT went up 10x from 10 years ago. I would expect you have multi millions if you didn’t sell
Exactly. 1 million stock after 10 years seems like being underpaid if you are a swe. Is that usual for Microsoft?
If you can’t tell, OP has been a lifer at MSFT which means their refreshers were peanuts all along for the past 10 years. Most stock came from ESPP which you didn’t have to be msft employee to accumulate that much. Anybody at any tech corp could gave bought $10k msft each quarter and held. It’s nothing unusual folks.
both happy for OP and a little sad. 10 years of stocks is 230k after the amazing run and ESPP >> RSU!
1 million. 230k is just the most recent
You should sell some and diversify before it's too late
Pretty much he has heard your comment 200 times during these 10 years.
Are you a senior software engineer now ?
When you sell - it will be $500K after taxes.
Isn’t it long term capital gains?
Wait but isn’t income taxed at vesting rather than sell?
@OP. Have you heard of "all eggs In The same basket " problem ? I
He probably has and he probably doesn’t give a shit either lol. Bro’s balling Truth is those working at FAANG have outperformed the market by not diversifying.
Mag7 has performed better than S&P. Probably OP gives no shit. He should start giving a shit now tho to diversify. Best time to be safe is now, because OP has now grown older - his risk taking ability has decreased.
Wow after 10 years only that much? I joined 4 years ago as a sr but have more than you. Weird
Congratulations! Good job
