I am currently in Utah and TC 65K, got an offer to move to San Jose, CA for Senior Technical Developer at an Insurance company. Will that be enough for family of 3? Wife will be staying at home with 18 months baby for now. UPDATED: After much negotiation and even threatening to walk away, they increased the offer to 118K but there will not be any relocation assistance :( Not even the 5K we asked! They said there are local candidates ready to accept the offer and this is the best they can give, relocation cost was not budgeted for this position. Recruiter mentioned they even need a VP to approve this exception as the offer is beyond their range! UPDATE2: After much thoughts on it, I have decided to accept the offer. This is the only way to move nearer to where I can develop my career further and this is just starting. I am even humbled to get an offer in current market. After budgeting everything, it is still sufficient. I got a friend agreed to rent us the big room for 1.3k and we will rent out our house here so it all works out at least temporarily for now. Appreciate all your supports so far! UPDATE3: My wife just got an offer for 145K plus potential bonus of 15% and 20k stock as Finance Manager in a Tech company!!!!!!!!! We are going for sure, I am so glad I accepted the 118K will defintely keep looking though! YOE: 8
The biggest cost difference is housing. San Jose is probably better career wise, but housing is expensive. How much do you spend now? Are you ok with a small apartment? Are you ok with a long commute?
You cant survive with that salary and family
No
Depression will be on the other side of that decision.
The state of California considers a 3-person household in San Jose to be Low Income if you make under $123,400
For a 3 person household, Median is $163,150 and Moderate is $195,800. https://www.hcd.ca.gov/sites/default/files/docs/grants-and-funding/income-limits-2023.pdf
No lol
Just look up the cost of housing and see what you can get within your budget. And see if that will improve the quality of life or savings.
No. You need to reject that low ball offer asap. Tell them you can work from Utah for 105k , but no way in hell you will move to SJ for that terrible salary.
No, quality of Life will take a dramatic hit
How much is needed for him to have same quality of life equal to what he is making now in UT?
With a family and kid, the minimum is about $175000
