APM - how much does domain matter?

Considering joining a: - Fintech/productivity tech like Expensify - Ecommerce player like BigCommerce/Shopify Both same size, pay, location etc. I'm afraid I'm going to get locked into B2B/specific industry. Is this a legitimate concern? Thanks in advance! #product #productmanagement

Depends on what type of PM you are. Generally you’ll have a much easier time moving within similar domain, especially if you’re a more specialized/technical PM. Also, TC?

Replied to another comment. What do you mean what “type”? Do you have an example?

Domain doesn’t matter but type does. Very valid concern to be limited to B2B opportunities in the future

By type, you mean B2B vs B2C? And domain, you mean e-com vs fintech vs productivity vs whatever?

Domain/industry isn’t really that big of deal honestly. I know many people and from looking at people’s employment history on LinkedIn that they’ve had no trouble switching jobs to other industries. The only thing I might avoid is just working on only B2B products very early. That might pigeon hole you a little bit to certain roles/companies. Since you’re an APM and have the advantage of saying you’re still an “early PM” try seeing if your company will let you do rotations in both their B2B and B2C products. That way you’ll be able to get a flavor for both and see which one you prefer doing in the long run. That’s what I did though.
