Did I mess up my career or is the industry really this fucked up? I’ve a total of 16 yoe in various companies ranging from top financial to internet to startup ones. And I’m still expected to leetcode? Where did I go wrong? I’m not happy with my current job and would like to move out. But the thought sends shivers down my spine thanks to leetcode. Looks like in the current environment you should either leetcode or just stfu and keep taking shit at your current company. And they say Silicon Valley has plenty of jobs. TC: 380k
There is really no perfect job. But obviously your current job pays the bills. So keep leetcoding and make time to do the other things that give you joy... if any
Level at Msft? A bunch of companies have better interviews than just leetcode like problems...you just need to seek them out if you hate leetcode

principal eng is 380K TC at msft?
Are you an IC or a manager?
IC
That’s where you went wrong then. As an IC, you are expected to code efficiently and the way most companies measure that (for better or worse) is through leetcode. If you don’t want to be tested on your coding abilities, you should move away from the IC track.
I can imagine what you feel. I am @10yoe I think I can do the Lc thing maybe once more and that’s it. I think job n+2 needs to come from networking. It’s ridiculous if one is l67 and people expect Lc to hire you.
Try Amazon. They care more about leadership principles than leetcode questions.
Don’t, instead leetcode and get a job at a company that will value you
Yeah this is terrible advice. Leetcode yourself into a better situation like most of Amazon is trying to do
Have you already started leetcoding or not? It may be that it’s just a mental block and something that you will be able to breeze past once you put in a few days/weeks of prep time. Start off with 1 (or 2) problem(s) per day and you might even like it sooner rather than later. Good luck!
I’ve already started. Been a month now. But still ....
Keep at it!! you’ll be a god damn machine soon!
Do you still remember data structures and algorithms from college?
Of course!
After 16 yoe? Do you actually get to apply them on a regular basis at work?
The industry is fucked up. You are fine.
Some companies are moving away from pure LeetCode. Two I have experienced are Lyft and Stripe. Instead of whiteboard coding, they ask you to bring your laptop, solve a coding problem, and submit your code at the end. They both still have system designs interviews. This process is not perfect but I appreciate both of them using a setup that mirrors real-life engineering work better. Based on the interview process, I'd highly recommend these two companies.
Yup I am having my Lyft loop coming and I was amazed there will be no leetcode. Kudos!
I was asked a backtracking question on lyft phone screen, the interviewer was 15 minutes late. If they’ve moved off that bs, good for them
