Currently, dont have any housing costs and tc is 180 k. Got an offer from a tech giant for 310 k tc in san francisco. Worth moving?
No.
What low cost city ?
Indianapolis
Then definitely not worth it unless you really dislike living there.
Do you know 300k TC is not small - I am not sure why people don’t understand that.
Not relevant. 180k is just better in the current city.
Of course it’s not small, but what’s the comparative lifestyle you could lead in Indy for 180k vs. SF for 300k?
Did you mean San Francisco or Bay Area? You can still live in Bay area and commute to SF which will be easy on cost of living. It also depends on your career path. Think if it is worth taking the chance for this opportunity you have dreamt of?
You can have 70k post tax housing costs and still benefit from the move. But the bay also sucks big time so that should be a factor too
Why does it suck?
The Bay is beautiful, it’s just also kind of a weird dystopia ... the surrounding area is a lot more socially normal though, with all of the perks of the Bay (beautiful scenery, high paying jobs). I would lock in that 300k role and then live near Sausalito or even San Rafael (if you’re comfortable with a commute).
Even if you save 20% annually with the tc in the Bay Area, it’s almost 35% of your tc in the small city. I say move to the Bay Area. TC growth will also be high as you will likely get stock refreshes.
Other things to consider besides the immediate compensation: - what’s your growth trajectory like in your current role? 300k is relatively entry level in tech, the upside growth potential is quite large - how’s the job market where you are? You can walk out the door of one employer in the bay and right into the next. Your job changing risks are relatively low. - are you happy where you’re at? There’s a lot more to life than just money (despite the behavior of most blinders) - California is a much different place to live. There’s a lot to love about it, and plenty to be frustrated with. Is it right for you?
No
