Started my journey in the US Tech industry in 2019 with ~50K of debt - credit card and MS student loan. Now at ~1M at 31yo Mostly in stocks with 6 month emergency funds in HYSA. 30% of NW is concentrated in META, 15% in MSFT, 2% in crypto, remaining in index and target date funds. Leveraged full 401K match + some % of after tax, automated recurring weekly investments - from the very first paycheck. The bull market has helped more than the bear has hurt - as I DCA and didn't sell. Put my brother through a foreign university and supporting my family back home. Not married yet. Always lived below my means. I understand now that there's no end to this NW chasing as my goal post just changed, but feels good to have some sort of safety net and a path towards financial independence. Didn't think I could land a high paying job when I first landed in the US in 2017 for my MS, let alone this sort of TC and NW. Mostly luck and periods of consistent hard work when needed. Thank you to the US Tech industry and its amazing people, forever grateful. Let me know, if there's anything I should think and do about, in my journey from here on. Any advice, suggestions, warnings, etc.? TC (USD): India: 5000, 5500 MS: 0, ~0 US: 180K, 220K, 280K, 360K, 620K
I think I know who you are. You’re giving too much information about yourself especially working at Microsoft and them moving to Meta as E5
Maybe on track financially, but way ahead in terms of clarity of thought and understanding of the value of money.
My parents taught me well I suppose. Thank you.
OP mentioned India in his post
why this question?
Congrats OP! I will do same when I move 🙏🏾
I know you will. Good luck.
Whats the breakdown of ur networth and what stocks/etfs did u invest in?
This is why folks come to America OP. Could you have done better? Sure you could have come right after bachelors and directly started at meta and you would be much better off. But you are still doing amazing given your delayed start
Congrats. Why do you have to post that here though? Posts like these are screwing it for visa workers and tech workers in general. Sharing it with your close circle should be enough.
I had the same feeling. I came to the US with literally a suitcase. I made my way through hard work ad careful saving. allowing myself indulgences, but not too many. over the years this paid back in my career and my finances. I am very thankful to the Tech industry, to my current company, and to the US policies that allowed me to get to this stuation. honestly, I think things are turning in the wrong way in US and soon the possibilities will get thin for these stories to repeat. Just look how San Francisco or Settle are turning into Zombie Lands....
Glad that this kind of mindset worked for you as well. Congratulations for doing this and reaping the benefits. I think people can still do it if they are able to find a good paying job, live below their means and save consistently. I see many young people splurging thinking they wouldn't be able to enjoy later in life and only 20s are suitable for having fun. Maybe it works out for them, but couldn't have for me given my delayed start.

Did you get a job offer this year?
Congratulations! Considering current and future market, do you think the same journey would be possible? (Assuming all else equal, same person as you)
Predicting the market for a decade ahead is a fool's errand, no one has a working crystal ball. DCA and chill.
Can't predict as Microsoft said above. Consistently DCA, look for high TC and live below your means - doing these things, which are in your control correctly is the best way to increase your chances.
