Facts about H1B

Looks like many Americans don't have a clear picture on H1-B. There's two sides of things --- 1. Many of us are from top universities in India, came for graduate studies to US (or even directly got hired from India by companies like Google/FB) etc... and do some great engineering/research work at all the big name tech companies.many have founded billion dollar companies.. The positions which are occupied by these people usually take 4-6 months to fill. The salaries for these people are really high and at par with Americans of same skillset (and certainly doesn't count as cheap labor) There's not enough Americans who have a CS degree. Those who do have usually find jobs quickly. Most Americans who have worked with these people would have pretty high opinions on their work usually. 2. There has been some abuse of H1-B mainly by Indian IT companies like Infosys, TCS etc. , they send people to work for their clients in US and pay them lower wages compared to the tech market range. Thankfully the share of people in this category out of the 85000 new people who get visas every year has been going down and is a small share now (I guess it would be at most 10 percent)... I strongly oppose this abuse too and more needs to be done to curb this. It's as simple as just putting a minimum salary limit as it won't be economical for these outsourcing companies to pay high salaries. I am only talking about the new visas amongst 85000 going down for outsourcing which is at least a good start.... There's definitely people who joined like 8 years back.... https://m.economictimes.com/tech/ites/us-tech-firms-get-more-h-1b-visas-in-fy19/articleshow/71915124.cms Also, if someone is interested, check the uscis website for new visas for 2018.. The count for outsourcing companies is low But banning all new H1-B or hating all of them because of this seems bit ignorant to me. The problem should be fixed at its core. Hope this clears up things a bit. I would be surprised if a person still hates everyone with a H1-B after knowing the facts.I would think those people are internally racist and just hiding their racism in the disguise of nationalism.

The top 10 companies are IT outsourcers. These are purely to keep American wages down. https://www.immihelp.com/employer/h1b-top-sponsor-2018/overall https://news.manikarthik.com/h1visa-companies-list/lifestyle/education/

Credit Karma ieiejdjf OP Jun 23, 2020

That list is for the total number of H1B per company who may have been hired 10 years back, not for the share in the new 85000 every year. That's why I specifically mentioned, it's been going down past few years...

Intel bosshawg Jun 23, 2020

There’s 100 sites showing the primary user of H1B visas are IT outsourcers with the outcome of lowering American wages. https://www.myvisajobs.com/Reports/2019-H1B-Visa-Sponsor.aspx https://goh1b.com/en/blog/2018/07/10/top-companies-that-sponsored-h1b-visas-in-2019/

Don't think you have read my post properly.. just sharing a random link doesn't mean shit... Search Google for "uscis approved petitions 2018" , you can see a PDF on USCIS website for the new 85000 visas allocated in 2018.. Do some math and find out how many of these 85000 were from indian IT companies... As I mentioned in my post, this has been a problem but has been thankfully improving past few years....

My friend got PhD from a top US university. Got a job with huge TC in a leading company right away (he’s not tech though). Once his OPT ran out, applied for H1b. Didn’t get it since H1b pool was flooded with 70k/year applications from TCS et al. Naturally, there are more shit tier candidates than top tier ones. And with the lottery component H1b actually lowers the bar talent wise (and salary wise too). US economy needs top talent, and H1b program in its current form fails to deliver top talent.

Then why are people opposing H1B on TC 🤔 There is another thread on blind where people are opposing H1B on high wage. Bdw Trump did directed USCIS for merit based H1B next year

Amazon De$i Jun 23, 2020

I have no idea why people are opposing. I always advocate for “applications with the highest salaries get the visas, nonprofits are exempt”

This! Merit based immigration has to be the answer. And I’m saying that as someone who came here on H1B.

Apple sudo-rm-rf Jun 23, 2020

Look above. You are telling me majority of h1b are India students who study in US? Only 10 percent from body shop companies that abuse h1b? I support banning h1b and give students in our universities other types of visa.

Man I graduated from a top CS school with bachelors and masters in US and making $300k+ and would have to leave the country next year. So frustrating. This system won’t change unfortunately.

Those ICCs abused the whole h1b system with fabricated resumes and fake offers. Not only they ruined the system, they also gave people the impression that Indians are dishonest. Why don’t Indians go against those cheaters?

I’d be down with replacing every H1B with an African American.

Amazon iLVE62 Jun 23, 2020

Even if a foreigner is 10-20% better than an American. The American should still get the job since this is his country and he has the right to a well paid job in his country.

Facebook cynical.ly Jun 23, 2020

Similarly, even if Amazon is 10-20% better than a local company, the business should be given to the local business company since it creates local jobs. So let other countries impose restrictions on Amazon?

Amazon iLVE62 Jun 23, 2020

Yes, why not? Countries should have the interest of their citizens first and then of private entities etc.

Adobe DXfR85 Jun 23, 2020

The tech job shortage is such an obvious lie. Where are all these unfilled jobs waiting to find the right candidate? If companies are so hard pressed for talent why do they insist on ridiculous LC interviews and only recruiting from 10 or so schools?

Microsoft WoofWoof!! Jun 23, 2020

^^^ this

Facebook qCBl25 Jun 23, 2020

My team has open positions for years. We don't want "just" anyone who can LC easy problems. Also aptitude for ML is harder to find even in CS graduates.

Amazon Mufasaa Jun 23, 2020

Just putting a minimum salary cap doesn't work. It might work for software engineers but if there is a shortage of nurses or some other random profession that doesn't typically pay high salaries, you still need to look outside of the country if there is a local shortage until the gap can be filled.

Amazon De$i Jun 23, 2020

Healthcare and education are typically nonprofit organizations. Nonprofits are exempt from the visa cap.

Amazon Mufasaa Jun 23, 2020

The point still stands. Not every profession has high salary.
