Planning to apply to Engineering Manager roles at Reddit. How much do M2 engineering managers make at Reddit? How is the work life balance? L6 SDM TC: 370k #engineering #reddit #engineeringmanagercomp
I just interviewed for an EM role there. they passed on me which I understood. That was one of my worst interviews ( oh well!). The people I talked to seemed super nice though. I also didn’t have a problem with their salary band. But Spotify pays beans, so maybe it’s different for you.
Thanks! How was the interview process ?
I didn’t go through the entire process but it was fairly straightforward and quick to get in. And they said if I was getting close to an offer or had one they would fast track me and not take weeks to put me thru multiple “on site” interviews
Also curious to hear more about general life there in engineering
Depends on the org, from what I know, Ads org is very good. SRE is good Other than that, it probably depends on your manager more than anything - we definitely have added a lot more process since 2020 so things are more stable than they used to be. But that also means it’s not quite as scrappy and fast paced as it once was, it depends on what you’re looking for. Our internal tooling isn’t as good as FAANG except it’s definitely getting better slowly. Experimentation is phenomenal, probably one of the few things I’d say is on par with top tier big companies. It’s still maturing but we have a pretty data oriented culture
Good to know. Thanks for the info. I have seen some EM openings in the ads space. Do you know how is the interview process for an Engineering Manager?
OPs TC seems low for an L6 SDM at Amazon. Were you promoted from L5?
No. This is my TC based on 2023 statement. This year I am assuming it will be much more(410k+) since stock prices have gone up and I have quite some of them vesting this year.
I also applied to an Engineering Manager role via referral, but no one came back so far. They’re either really slow or bad at their job. Let us know how it goes for you.
Our recruiters are really slow sometimes - tell your referrer to follow up, they reply instantly when an employee messages in the Slack channel to follow up on a candidate.
Will do, thanks.
Will you bring your Amazon management practices to Reddit? 😓
No. I like to think I’m a good people manager. That’s why I think of leaving Amazon.
Honestly it’s pretty damn good for everything except TC. Maybe if you joined pre 2021/2020. But I love the culture, WLB, the people, and fully remote is a godsend. The biggest change I noticed from my previous company (Google) is how much friendlier/approachable everyone is; the culture on Slack is actually pretty cool and I take it for granted after 4 years here. Main issue again is TC is not on par with companies like Pinterest/Snap. Also some of the executives are underqualified IMO
Thanks! On Linkedin I have observed that a lot of folks working at Reddit are from FAANG level companies. Definitely looking for a company with good culture. Wondering how low the TC is for EMs.
Yeah our company is full of ex Meta and Google since 2021. Not always a good thing, but some really bright ICs here. At the same time we upleveled directors from those companies into VP positions so that’s where the underqualified part comes in. For TC IDK about managers, but as a senior SWE my TC is around 320k. This isn’t bad but Pinterest and Snap and top tier FAANGs pay more IMo. We are fully remote though with offices that are available but optional to go to, so for me that’s worth an extra 30-40k in TC but your own interpretation of that may be different. YOE: 7.5
