Burned out super hard at Google - starry eyed new grad who went full bipolar to get to L4 š„ Live in the DC metro, so just looking for a government/defense contractor role where I can just log on and maybe do a few hours. Happy to put up with beauracracy and politics. Anyone else make the jump? 3.5 YOE TC 240k
Chill out. It takes more to get promoted than to meet expectations at the new level. Just take it easy the next few months.
Youāll regret it. Just coast until you get pipped. Meanwhile, try to jump to a different tech company. Or be proactive and switch teams within Google. So many orgs, so many teams. You didnāt come this far just to come this far. Leave defense as your ālast resortā backup option. Those jobs will always be there, always hiring. Once you are forced out of tech and have no other options, then go to defense.
don't do it
My spouse is finishing his career as a DoD contractor. He loves the work, has no politics and works a remote, 4x10 schedule. You will take a $90K pay cut. Companies like KBR, Leidos and Booz Allen will sponsor your security clearance. Check out clearancejobs to find the names of other contracting firms Since you are just starting out, you should consider getting a government job instead because of the pension and health insurance when you retire. The pay will be similar or slightly higher as you gain experience. As others have mentioned, switching teams at Google may be all you need to refresh. The money you earn and shares you accumulate now will be very valuable in 25 years.
Take it. People here have no idea how shit burnout can be. I have all the money I ever dreamed of but not even in the right mind to use it anymore. Go for a government job and let your mind rest for a bit.

Should be simple, you will be more capable than 99% of your colleagues. The defense pool is pretty awful.
My spouse, who spent 15 years at Microsoft (L66), as well as at Oracle and startups is finishing his career as a defense contractor. He has talented, and not so gifted, coworkers just like anywhere else including at your company. Have you worked in that field, @Microsoft?
