london for career growth - SWE

Good to see an increase in number of Europe-based openings and discussions here on Blind. I’m a student and I finally cracked FAANG internship interview for summer 2021 (FB). The position is in London, and I’m very excited. I want to try hard and deserve that full time offer. I come from a poor country so UK is a major step up. When I was a fresman I was sure I would go (at least try to) go to US. Now I’m not so sure. UK is closer to where I’m from (2h flight, compared to 8h to NY or 15+ to Seattle). Also immigration is easier to deal with in London, and I could get citizenship relatively soon. But what it comes to are the possibilities for career growth. I’d like to gradually take on more responsibility and take the managerial route. I know the best place for this is SV but I don’t want to go there, just isn’t for me. I like Seattle way more and that’s the place I would go in the US. The TC is so much bigger there, but the living costs would be far greater in SV, but in Seattle maybe only a little bit higher than London. Would be able to save the most in Seattle I think. But I also want to enjoy life, so London seems better from that aspect. I know it’s pretty early to think about the future, but I would like to have some guidance on whether to try to relocate or not. London seems like a very interesting city to live in, and is close to mainland Europe which is famous for many cool tourist destinations. It’s growing as a tech hub, and also has firms such as Citadel/JS/HRT that offer good TC in exchange for worse WLB and less interesting, non-product work. So what do you think? Is it a good idea to try to settle in London, or try US out? Also - I’m not interested in people clicking Yes/No, so I’m not attaching a poll. I want arguments.

With the current covid19 situation, no one knows when offices will open again. You might end up doing your internship from your home country next year. Anyway, London is an awesome city. A bit expensive though. If your goal is to enjoy WLB, stay in Europe. The culture is much more relaxed there. If you want TC and opportunities, then obviously US is the place to be. But getting a US work visa is not easy.

So far yes the US has been the best. Given the immigration situation, virus and political situation there may be a shift in the future. London is probably the next best place to the Us anyway so Start your career there and then re asses after a year in 2021 summer when things get better

Yes, I also think this is the optimal approach.
