Would taking a 20% project (in a big product such as Maps/Youtube etc) have a negative impact towards promotion? How was your 20% project experience?
It's more like (100+)20% project now
Yes it will impact promo. You have alll your other commitments. You really think that’s a real thing?
Yes. A few reasons to still do it. 1. It gives you an opportunity to work with a substantially more senior eng to give feedback on your packet. For example if it would let you work and get feedback from an L8 when everyone on your actual team is only L3-L6. This is pretty common as a lot of high level ICs just work on random shit they think is interesting. (Sanjay's projects are never going to go anywhere) 2. There is 0 scope left on your current team. In reality you should be looking to switch teams at this point and a 20% project is sometimes used as a gateway to get on a more competitive team. 3. It just sounds fun? Google let's you fuck around if you aren't trying to get promoted. So might be worth trying out some run things without fully committing to a team swap.
And that’s why you don’t take advice from strangers %) How many cases you know of people getting exposure to L8 through a 20% project? L8 feedback is important for L6+, how many L6+ promo packages you know where 20% made a difference? Or even when L6 worked on 20% project when they were working on their promo?
Depends on your goals. It’s a good way to network and figure out your next step. It’s also potentially a way to plug a gap you need for promo. It could also be net neutral or negative career wise if you don’t pick strategically.

20% thing has been dead for 10 years or so.
It was dead when I joined in 2011. At the time the joke was that it’s in addition to your existing 100-110%. Not sure how real it ever was (maybe getting spare resources was easier?)
It’s surprising how so many people still think Google is the same company it was 10 years ago.
