28 mile commute

Is it worth it to live in a super nice place that's also half the cost of living in the city? Belmont to Fidi

How long it takes to commute 28 miles?

Google nJXQ7h Feb 21, 2020

That's the real question!

Looks like between 30-40 min. I get a MUCH nicer share place (1700sf) for 2500 with all utilities included

I drive 30 miles one way daily. Same COL but a better place to live. Drive is about 40-45 mins for 30 miles. However if your plan is to leetcode and move later, then I suggest to stay closer to work. I get tired after driving so much and also waste of time.

No leetcoding since I'm moving from the east coast for a new job

Try the commute a few times, at the exact times you’d be doing it for real, and then make a decision. Here in the Bay Area, a commute that would take 45min at 11am can take 2h+ at peak times.

If you have a family than do whats best for them I drove 2.5-3 hrs each way 5 days a week for about a year, its do able. But if you're a young gun than enjoy the city life.

No family, but as I replied to another response: I like my home to be my home where I can actually relax, not just a crash pad. A shit place will not make me feel comfortable after a long work day.

Commute sucks. I would rather live in a shit place with no commute than a nice one wasting 1 and and half hour driving every day

Thing is, I like my home to be my home where I can actually relax, not just a crash pad. A shit place will not make me feel comfortable after a long work day.

30-40 minutes in the right car isn’t terrible. If you have or can reasonably afford a car with stop n go cruise control and lane keep assist I’d say go for the commute. Tesla is the most popular but lots of more affordable cars have similar functionality- https://www.cars.com/articles/which-cars-have-self-driving-features-for-2019-402645/

Thanks for this. Also, I won't be going over any bridges so I'll get away from that madness. Work is in Fidi/design district and home will be in Belmont/Brisbane area

Gotcha. If you don’t already have stop n go cruise control try renting a car from turo for a week with it to see if the difference is worth it

My bus ride is twice as long for half the distance

45 mile commute. Takes me around an hour and a half on a good day.
