I'm working remotely for a no-name American startup, making around 10x my local market rate for my full stack position. My company wants to sponsor me to come to their location in upstate New York with a tentative offer of 100k. This offer seems alluring but putting things into perspective makes me think it may not be a good idea. I have a hyper low COL here, no rent, etc. A major con of staying is that I probably couldn't reach FAANG TC levels and career advancement is probably limited. Another option is to take express entry to Canada in hopes of finding an even higher TC than what has been offered to me. Thoughts on my situation? TC:70k YOE:2
I actually don't know, there must be something in for them, but I just don't see it.
So your regular "market rate" would be ~7k? Holy guacamole.
Yup, and tbh one could reasonably live with it, hyper low COL
Move to America and switch to a high paying job after a year. Simply no doubt about this. Canada as such won’t offer anything to you socially or economically
bro that's stupid as fuck, it's almost impossible for a random soft eng to make 10x local rates in USA and because of tax brackets it's probably way better for OP to stay in South America even if they can get close to 10x
I don’t think so. Let’s assume OP makes 100k in SA. Assume for simplicity tax is 20%. He nets 80k and saves around 75k. COL is super cheap. Now OP moves to NYC. 100k for a year will suck but after a year and half he gets green card. Now he gets a 250k job. He can save way more than 75k on that. Also the number of companies paying 250k+ is >>>>>>>> number of companies paying 100k in LATAM. Even 175-200k will net OP more money and QOL
You don't get paid "even better" in Canada...forget about it
After some google searching for compensation levels in Canada, you're absolutely right, thanks for that insight.
