TC: 200k YOE: ~5 as TechnialProgramManager Had a 2nd interview @ Snap, here is how that went...open up with the basic stuff, tell me about your background etc. etc. They then ask me a pointed question about one of the things I mentioned in my background.... then proceeded to tell me that what we should have done (this is a social media company thats about on par with snap) and how what we did was stupid.Now...I can with 100% certainty promise you, what he said was the dumbest comment I've ever heard in my life. **** It was as absurd as if he told me that google should have just used Squarespace to make the google.com page **** Next, he tells me a project they have that is high priority -- which is identical to something I did at my previous role. He asks for specific info -- when I give a high level overview he is not happy and starts asking incredibly specific questions. **** It was the same as if I was interviewing at Pepsi, and they asked me to give them the exact ingredients list of Coca-Cola, and then tell them in exactly what machines are used, material of machines, quantities of each item, time of the day it happens, everything and it was absurd. **** Literally just straight up bs trying to take a fully baked idea and go off and implement it himself. I feel sorry for anyone who has to work for this person.
Don’t feel too bad. Our PMs and TPMs here are truly bottom of the barrel. Sounds like you dodged a bullet.
Our PM and TPMs are the best!
Sorry you had to go through this. Snap TPMs are grossly incompetent.
Was this the ads platform TPM role?
Sorry our bar is high! Your interview analysis seems grossly one-sided. We need to view the interviewers notes to see how you actually performed. That being said, I do apologize that you didn’t have fun in the interview. Next time 👋🏼
I’ve had bad interviews where I 100% admit it was bad because I was was way under qualified for the role and just did horribly. I’ve also had bad interviews where the job description wasn’t exactly what they told me on a call. This was neither of those.
OP, this is probably who interviewed you. Sarcasm, condescension and all.
Sorry you had to endure this. I've had this happen before too, they were just trying to pick my brain and basically get a free consultation. There's no way to spot this beforehand unfortunately. I suppose you could give feedback to the recruiter and shit on them on Glassdoor.
Instacart and Reddit did the same, but the person was not nearly as abhorrent or aggressive at either place as Snapchat was.
Assuming they really are hiring and not just building a backlog of candidates, I think this is hiring managers getting threatened by your resume and "gatekeeping" the interview so you can't get in. If they can make you feel bad and pick your brain at the same time, then even better. I have also had interviews where there was clear gatekeeping and territoriality going on.
