I came to the US for college, then got a green card through my job and recently became a citizen. I’ve been considering filing for my parents green cards, and bringing them here to live with us, as they enter the retirement age. Does anyone have any experience with this ? My parents are on board with this idea, but I’m not exactly sure how complicated and expensive it is; would love to hear your experiences. Somewhat worries about the healthcare costs... Are there any other hurdles I’m not anticipating?
How will you manage health insurance for them? As far as I know employers only cover for your family: wife, kids, etc.. What options are you considering? Health care . gov?
If parents have GC or US citizenships then healthcare gov can help If in California then covered California or medical can help.
Which country are you from that you went from studies to citizenship so soon?
He’s probably not indian. It’s very easy to get a green card if you’re not Indian.
Getting familiar with US culture and lifestyle could take time at the retirement age. They will have to start all over again.
Yes, but OP said they’re on board with the decision. Frankly, the generalization that all parents are unfamiliar with the US culture is not always valid. A certain amount of adjustment is inevitable but it shouldn’t be generalized.
Do it quick before Trump shuts the door for chain migration
I did it for my parents after becoming US citizen. I can guide you. DM me. I am of Indian origin.
Need more info.. whats your country of birth? If Indian, entire process may take 3-5+ years.. application filing fees im pretty sure not more than $2k for parents.
Thanks everyone for the responses. I’m European, which is how I got my green card/citizenship fairly quickly. I checked and I think it should take about a year for my parents green cards if I file them. As for them, they grow up and live in a capital city (few million people), downtown. They are both pretty educated (my mom’s a professor at the country’s best university), and liberal. If they move, they’d want to be in a large liberal city, so probably Seattle or NYC (they think Sf is too dirty/hectic). Does anyone have experience with healthcare gov for their parents? Spending a few thousand on legal fees is not an issue; mostly concerned about healthcare + any other major cost factors I’m unable to anticipate
It would be nice if direct relations are covered in employer health insurances. Unfortunately its not the case. Only way is to go through health care .gov and pay good amount of money.
Odd that parents aren't considered family for insurance in this country
Yup exactly
lawyers have experience with it
